Miss Fisher was born in Halifax County on May 17, 1915, the daughter of George William Fisher and Lena Stowe Fisher. She was a member of Liberty United Church of Christ. Survivors include two sisters, Gracie F. Dodson and Bertha F. Motley, both of Nathalie; one brother, Roy C. Fisher of South Boston and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by five brothers and one sister. Graveside services for Miss Fisher will be held today, October 1 at Liberty United Church of Christ Cemetery at 2 p.m. with the Rev. John Wilder conducting the service. Estelle Bailey Wilkerson Estelle Bailey Wilkerson, 87, of 1055 Wilkerson Trail, Alton, died September 30 at The Woodview. Mrs. Wilkerson was born in Person County, N.C. on September 23, 1914, the daughter of the late Robert Daniel Bailey Sr. and Fannie Humphries Bailey and was married to the late Joe Wilkerson. She was a member of Alton Baptist Church, the WMU of the church and a member of the Alton Homemakers Club. The was retired from Halifax Community Hospital as a Registered Nurse. Graveside services will be held October 2 at 2 p.m. at Alton Baptist Church with the Rev. Phillip Ellenburg officiating. Survivors of Mrs. Wilkerson include one son, Page Wilkerson of Alton; two daughters, Josephine Gulley of Alton and Joyce Poindexter of Martinsville; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Robert and Jack Bailey and two sisters, Annie Brooks Johnson and Thelma Wilkins. 'Deck' Hankins Jr. James Poindexter 'Deck' Hankins Jr., 76, of 329 Mountain Road, Halifax, died September 27 at his home. Mr. Hankins was born in Halifax County on January 1, 1925, the son of James Poindexter Hankins Sr. and Laura Vick Hankins and was married to Hilda Moore Hankins. He was a life long member and former senior warden of St. John's Episcopal Church. He attended V.M.I., was a veteran and P.O.W. of World War II. Mr. Hankins was a graduate of the University of Richmond in 1949, where he was a member of the Phi- Gamma-Delta Fraternity. He was a former principal of Turbeville Elementary School, first personnel director of the South Boston Westinghouse plant and first director of development for Hampton Roads Academy in New Port News. He was a member of the Blue Ribbon committee for the planning and building of Halifax County High School and was retired owner and operator of Hankins Furniture House. Survivors of Mr. Hankins include his wife; two daughters, Laura Lee Chandler and husband, Ted, and Anne Moore and husband, Art, all of Midlothian; one son, James P. 'Deck' Hankins III and wife, Debra, of High Point, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Katie and Rebecca Chandler, Emily Anne, Ryan and Chandler Moore, and Dexter and Kristina Hankins. Carolyn Williams Tanner Carolyn Williams Tanner of South Boston, died September 27 at Danville Regional Hospital at the age of 69. Mrs. Tanner was born in Halifax County on April 9, 1932, the daughter of Louise Hankins Williams and Henry Williams. Senn Johnnie B. Senn, 63, of 1204 Lee-Syd-Moore Road, Scottsburg, died September 28 at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, N.C. Mr. Senn was born in Newberry, S.C. on January 14, 1938, the son of Johnnie Senn and Willie Mae Burton senn and was married to Roxie Leigh Senn. He was a member of St. James Baptist Church and a retired employee of the Acacia Insurance Company. Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Sheree Clayton of Washington, D.C., Bernadette Senn of Waldolf, Md., Angela Senn of Washington, D.C. and Quiana Senn of Scottsburg; three sons, Johnnie D. October 3, 2001 Gene Wesley Ridgeway Gene Wesley Ridgeway, 61, of 1029 Snead Lane, Halifax died September 30 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Mr. Ridgeway was born in Halifax County on February 25, 1940, the son of Roy Thomas Ridgeway Sr. and Mary Henderson Ridgeway, and was married to Marion Stone Ridgeway. Burial will take place in Halifax Baptist Church Cemetery. Glenda Lee Reebals Glenda Lee Reebals, 50, of Orlando, Fla., formerly of Swannanoa, N.C., died September 26 at an Orlando Hospital. She was born March 19, 1951 in Buncombe County, N.C., the daughter of Mable Lee of Black Mountain, N.C. and the late Talman G. Lee, and was married to George Reebals. She worked as a pediatric nurse. Survivors include her husband; mother; children, Nikki VanKerschaever of Apopka, Fla, Jason Parker of Granite Falls, N.C., Zachary Reebals and Ashley Reebals, both of Longwood, Fla., and Beth Tingen of South Boston; a brother, Don Lee and his wife, Karen of Swannanoa; grandchildren, Chris, Cody, Austin, Amanda, Ryan, Jake and Justin. Born in Halifax County and raised in Red Oak, he was the son of Harold and Gladys Collie Sr. A member of Public Fork Christian Church, he operated Collie, Inc., a logging company. October 5, 2001 Mattie Chandler Mattie Chandler of Crystal Hill died October 1 at Berry Hill Nursing Home at the age of 80. She was born in Halifax County on April 8, 1921, to the late Gertrude Williams and the late James Hundley. Survivors of Mrs. Chandler include 11 nieces and three nephews. Funeral services will be held October 6 at 2 p.m. at Crawford, Garrett & Burton Funeral Chapel in Halifax with Elder Branford Edmonds officiating. Barbara Leigh Vaughan Barbara Leigh Vaughan, 43, of Virgilina, died October 3 at the home of her parents, Albert and Mary Vaughan. Ms. Vaughan was born June 8, 1958. She is survived by one daughter, Yasmine; her parents, brothers and sisters. A memorial service will be held at Aarons Creek Baptist Church today, October 5 at 2 p.m., with visitation immediately following at the church. Burial will be private. Garland Moore Locks Garland Moore Locks, 80, of Petersburg, formerly of South Hill, died September 12. He was a native of Clover, born the son of the late Thomas U. and Hattie B. Locks. Mr. Locks was a career Navy man, entering the service in 1940. He served aboard USS Arizona, detaching in October, shortly before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. He earned 13 Battle Stars, participating in all major amphibious campaigns of the Pacific Theater during WWII and the Korean Conflict; participated in the 1942 invasion of Guadalcanal, and in the battles for New Guinea, the Marshall, Caroline and Mariana Island, the liberation of the Philippines, the invasions of Iwo Jima and Okinawa; was among the first naval personnel to enter the Japanese home islands as part of the U.S. Occupational Force. In Korea, Mr. Locks saw extensive action, including landings at Inchon and operation of small craft behind enemy lines. After his retirement from active duty, he returned to sea, serving 20 years as a civilian mariner with the military Sea Transportation Service. He operated extensively in the coastal waters of Vietnam. Mr. Locks is survived by a son, Capt. John T. Locks USN of Newport, R.I.; four daughters, Judge Garland L. Bigley of Petersburg, Virginia L. Ladd of Wakefield, Patricia L. Myrick of Appomattox and Elizabeth C. Locks of Petersburg; one brother, Roy C. Lacks of Newport News; two sisters, Gertrude L. Clark of South Boston and Ruby L. Lacks of Clover; 10 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Mr. Locks was buried with full military honors in Arlington National Cemetery at 2 p.m. on September 19. She was born June 3, 1919 in Halifax County and was 82 years old. She was the daughter of the late Alfred Jefferson Jones and Sallie Cassada Jones. Mrs. Daniel was of the Baptist Faith. Survivors include two sons, Rodney Wilborn and Tommy Wilborn, both of South Boston; two sisters, Ruth Jones Testerman of Barren Springs and Dorothy Jones Hunsucker of Clairmont, N.C.; one brother, Robert Jones of Charlottesville; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Otto Coleman Otto Coleman of 1163 Piney Grove Rd., Alton, died Friday, October 5 at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was 85 years old. Mr. Coleman was born in Mecklenburg County July 4, 1916 and was the son of the late William Coleman and Fannie Tucker Coleman. He was married to Mabel Barksdale Coleman and served as a deacon and trustee of the New Bethel Baptist Church. He was a retired employee of Georgia-Pacific and also farmed for many years. Mr. Coleman is survived by his wife; two daughters, Edith Coleman Hines of the Bronx, N.Y. and Emma Coleman Fields of Great Falls; two sons, William E. Coleman of Alton and Cecil O. Richard Hand Murray, 96, of Rocky Mount, N.C., died October 7. Rev. Murray was born April 25, 1905, in Pender County, N.C., to John R. and Annie B. Murray. He was a retired boiler maker with Atlantic Coast Line Railroad and Portsmouth Naval Yard, also a retired minister serving churches in N.C.
