Mr. Ridgeway was born in Halifax County on December 29, 1949, the son of Roy T. Ridgeway and Eunice S. Ridgeway. Survivors include three sons, Jamie Lee Ridgeway of Lynchburg, Jeremy Rea and wife, Nicole Ridgeway of Lynchburg, and John Thomas Ridgeway of West Hampton, N.Y.; one daughter, Julie Renea Ridgeway of Lynchburg; one granddaughter, Bayley Renea Ridgeway; his parents of Halifax; one brother, Mark David Ridgeway of Greenville, Ohio; and one sister, Mae Beth Odom of Kinston, N.C. He was preceded in death by one son, Jason David Ridgeway. Mrs. Hartridge was born in Halifax County on April 1, 1935, the daughter of the late Willie Holt Easley Sr. and Elizabeth Younger Easley and was married to the late L.C. Hartridge. She was a former member of New Zion Baptist Church. Survivors include three sons, Eugene and Michael Hartridge of Washington, D.C. and Gary Hartridge of Landover, Md.; seven sisters, Juanita Marshall of Washington, Aline Martin, Evelyn Anderson, Inez Hartridge, Lou Bailey and Mattie Logan, all of Halifax and Joann Hendrick of Baltimore, Md.; five brothers, Willie H. Durelle Zee Hodges Durelle Zee Hodges, 75, of Boydton, died December 31 at Community Memorial Health Center in South Hill. Mr. Hodges was born in Halifax County. He was a member of Boydton United Methodist Church, Boydton Ruritan Club and worked for Burlington Industries, retiring after 41 years. Mrs. Shelton was born in Gretna on October 20, 1912, the daughter of John Oliver Stephens and Mattie Wright Stephens and was married to Larkin W. Shelton. Spraggs Sr., 82, of Farmville died December 29, 2001. He was married to the late Louise Spraggs and most was serving as pastor of Mercy Seat Baptist Church in Farmville and had served as principal of Central Elementary School in Palmyra. Rev. Spraggs was a recognized leader for not only his work in education and religion, but also for his work in the area of Poverty Programs that benefited many. He received the Outstanding Personality of the South award for his achievements. Survivors include two sons, LeVohn and Paul and his wife, Rynzelle; one adopted daughter, Mary Woodson and her husband, Kenneth; two grandchildren, Daryn and Marques; three sisters, Dr. Rosa S. Mrs. Guthrie was born in Campbell County on September 29, 1922, the daughter of Walter Ray Carwile and Lucile Smith Carwile. She was married to James Edward Guthrie and was a member of Childrey Baptist Church, National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Red Hill Chapter and the Campbell Co. Historical Society. He was married to Annie Lawson Small and was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, New York and was an Army veteran. He was married to Mecia Rich Wilborne. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Halifax Little Theater, Faulkner Memorial Masonic Lodge #91, and Thalian Hall. Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Ann R. Mrs. Wilborne was born in Mecklenburg County on December 8, 1952, the daughter of the late Thomas and Ruby Oliver Robertson. She was a member of Silone Baptist Church where she served as secretary of the Sunday school and also worked with the youth department. She was formerly employed by the Mecklenburg County School System as a teachers aide. Survivors include her husband, Wayne Wilborne of Halifax; one son, Ryan Wilborne of Halifax; one sister, Rosa R. Johnson of Jersey City, NJ; three brothers, Charles Robertson of South Hill, Ervin T. and Ernest C. Mr. DeJarnette was born in Pittsylvania County on June 2, 1944, son of Elsie Clay DeJarnette of Lynchburg and the late Ellis B. DeJarnette. He was a member of Edge Baptist Church and was a farmer. In addition to his mother, he is survived by one son, Jody Wayne DeJarnette of Orlando, Fla.; two uncles, Birl J. DeJarnette of Gladys and Telbert Clay of Lynchburg; two aunts, Fleecy Dowdy of Madison Heights and Adell Conner of South Boston. Edward Taylor Overton Sr. Edward Taylor Overton Sr., 83, of Halifax died at his home on January 8. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Martin Overton; three children, Edward Taylor Overton Jr. and his wife, Martha DeBord of Williamsburg, Ramah Overton Cook and her husband, John of Atlanta, Ga. and John Clayton Overton and his wife, Kathryn Reichel of Silver Spring, Md.; two grandchildren, Taylor St. John Overton of Silver Spring and Edward Taylor Overton III of Williamsburg; one sister, Minnie Overton Goodman of Alexandria. The son of John B. Overton of Farmville and Ida Leigh Bondurant of Rice, he was born February 15, 1918, in Farmville. His family moved to Halifax in 1932, where he attended Halifax High School, excelling in sports including basketball, baseball and track. Mr. Overton attended the University of Richmond and was inducted into the US Army Air Force in 1942. A graduate of the US Army Air Forces Technical School, he served in the 510th Bombardment Squadron, 351st Bomb Group of the 8th Air Force, Polebrook, England. His service included campaigns at Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. After the war, he completed his 54-year career with the US Postal Service in Halifax. In 1967, he was appointed Rural Letter carrier, a position he held until his retirement. Mr. Overton was a member and ordained deacon at Beth Car Baptist Church, where he also served as superintendent of Sunday School and Training Union. He served as PTA president for Halifax Elementary School and Halifax County High School, served on the State PTA Board for 15 years, and was a life member of the PTA. His membership and support of civic, social and professional organizations included the Halifax County United Way Board, president of the Halifax Lions Club, Halifax Sportsmen Club, Halifax Country Club, Esquire Club, Halifax County Gun Club and the Wilson Memorial Ruritan Club. Mr. Overton was a Charter and Life member of both the Southside and the Virginia Master Gardener Associations, Life member of the 351st Bomb Group Association, and member of the National Rural Letter Carriers Association. He served as a long time 4-H volunteer Master Gardener and Master Gardener Tree Steward volunteer and Master Gardener training instructor for Virginia Cooperative Extension. Funeral services for Mr. Overton will be held at 2 p.m. today, January 11 at Beth Car Baptist Church with the Revs. Lewis Wall and John Wilder officiating. Mrs. Patterson was educated in the public schools of Carroll County. She received a Bachelor of Science degree from Radford College and a Master of Physical Education from the University of Virginia. She had a long career as a public school teacher in Carroll and Halifax counties. Active in church and community affairs, Mrs. Patterson was a long time member of Halifax Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday school, served as an officer in the Women of the Church and as an Elder of the church. Mrs. Patterson was active in the Berryman Green Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Halifax Woman's Club, Halifax County Retired Teachers Association and Delta Kappa Gamma. She was a member of the Wood's River Chapter of the Virginia Society Colonial Dames XVII Century in Carroll County and most recently a member of the Rand's Mill Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Garner. Her accomplishments as a winning basketball coach were recognized by her induction into the Halifax County/South Boston Sports Hall of Fame. January 25, 002 Robert Holt Edmunds Robert Holt Edmunds, 88, of Greensboro, N.C., died January 23. Mr. Edmunds was born September 21, 1913, to Henry and Louisa Edmunds in Halifax. He graduated from Halifax County High School and attended Hampton-Sydney College, where he played football. He thereafter worked for Imperial Tobacco. Mr. Edmunds joined the United States Army Air Corps in World War II. He reached the rank of Captain and served in the Middle East and Europe. After discharge from the Army, he lived in Halifax while working for the family creamery business. In 1946, he married the former Mary Lewis Rucker of Greensboro. In 1957, he moved to Greensboro and founded Edmunds Manufacturing Company, a steel fabricating business. He continued to run this firm until shortly before his death. Mr. Edmunds loved tennis and for many years was co-holder of the title of North Carolina Senior Doubles Champion. He served on the vestries of St. John's Episcopal Church in Halifax and Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Greensboro, where he was senior warden. He was an active member of Rotary, the Greensboro Whist Club, and the Greensboro Investment Club. She attended Anthony Grammar School, Ferrum High School and graduated from Hardin Reynolds Memorial High School. Ms. Anthony graduated from Averett College and Radford College, and received a Masters degree in Education from the University of Virginia, where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa Honorary Society. She taught school in Patrick and Henry counties, Martinsville city and Roanoke city. Ms. Anthony was a member of Blackberry Baptist Church, a former member of the Colonel Abram Penn Chapter of the DAR, where she served in a number of capacities. She served as a member of the Patrick County Bicentennial Commission and was also a founding member of the Patrick Henry Volunteer Fire Department. Survivors include a sister, Hallie A.
