Dr. Starnes graduated from Ferrum College, Lynchburg College, Westminster Seminary, and Nova University where he received his doctorate. He was a United Methodist minister for 10 years, than a full professor of Philosophy of Eastern and Western Religions for 27 years. He had served as a chaplain in the US Army Reserves. Survivors include his wife, Martha Nash Starnes; three sons, Lincoln M. Starnes and his wife, Mary of Atlanta, Ga., Daniel B. Starnes and wife, Connie of Sierra Vista, Az. and Benjamin W. Starnes and wife, Margie of Bethesda, Md.; three granddaughters, Nancy Elizabeth Starnes, Cary Amy Starnes and Shaelyn Cheyenne Starnes; his mother, Isabel Coleman Starnes of South Boston; and one brother, F. Coleman Starnes and wife, Linda of Fredericksburg. Dr. Starnes was preceded in death by his father, Oscar B. Starnes. Helen Gertrude Smith Doss Helen Gertrude Smith Doss, 91, of 1214 Washington Avenue, South Boston, died January 30 at her home. Mrs. Doss was born in Halifax County on June 23, 1910, the daughter of Richard Walker Smith and Ada Jane Long Smith and was married to Harry Allen Doss. She was a member of McCanless Memorial United Methodist Church. Survivors include one daughter, Jane D. Newton of South Boston; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one daughter, Katherine Davis; and one grandchild. Graveside services for Mrs. Doss were held January 30, at 4 p.m. at Halifax Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Dr. Robert Fox officiating. Clyde Edward Lawson Clyde Edward Lawson, 86, of Philadelphia, Pa., formerly of South Boston, died January 26. Mr. Lawson was born February 17, 1915, to the late Aaron and Susie Lawson in South Boston and was married to Alice Walker Lawson. In addition to his wife, survivors include six children, Shirley, Edward, Clarence, Brenda, James and Linda; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; four sisters, Alease Tuck, Mary Owens, Annie Crawley and Beulah Murphy; four brothers, Daniel, Otis, James and Walton Lawson. Frank Dudley Moorefield Frank Dudley Moorefield, 90, of Hurt, died January 29 in Gretna Health Care Center. Mr. Moorefield was born May 30, 1911, in Pittsylvania County, the son of the late Monroe Moorefield and Olivia Roach Moorefield. He was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church, Polk Lodge #61 A.F. & A.M., the Renan Fire Department and Virginia Farm Bureau. He was a dairyman and tobacco farmer. Survivors include one son, Everett Moorefield Sr. of Hurt; three sisters, Willie Crews of Altavista, Minnie Shelton of Lynchburg and Frances 'Susie' Rowland of Hurt; one grandson, Everett Dudley Moorefield Jr. of Fort Campbell, Ky.; a niece, Bettie Allen and her husband, Steve and family of South Boston; a special friend, Hattie Hall and her children; and other nieces and nephews. Mrs. Lacks was born in Halifax County on June 21, 1932, the daughter of Bruce E. and Fannie Powell Martin. She was a member of Hunting Creek Baptist Church. Her survivors include two daughters: Gladys Bollinger of Scottsburg and Mary Francisco of Nathalie; son: Edwin "Pete" Lacks of Panama City, FL; four sisters: Linabee Newcomb of Victoria, Helen Wilson of South Boston, Mary Martin of Randolph and Irene Rickman of Saxe; four brothers: Lewis and Roy Martin of Randolph, Edwin "Booster" Martin of Saxe and Robert Martin of Roxboro, NC; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Mrs. Walker was born in Halifax County on May 4, 1930, the daughter of the late Garland Stanley Jackson and Emma Oakley Hamlett and was married to Thomas Wendell Walker. She was a member of Black Walnut Baptist Church, Cluster Springs Homemakers Club, Alton Homemakers Club, and a former member of Grace Methodist Church, Roxboro, N.C. She was retired owner/operator of Lorene's Flower & Gift Shop. Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Gail D. Epps and Wendy W. Mrs. Edmondson was born in South Boston on July 3, 1916, the daughter of Archie Cleveland Johnston and Janie Richardson Johnston and was married to Robert Hurt Edmondson. Mr. Bray was born in Person County, NC, the son of William H. and Dean Vera Tingen Bray, and was married to Betty Ann Miles Bray. He served in the National Guard and was a member of Theresa Baptist Church. Mr. Bray was a farmer and retired from ABB Power T&D Co., Inc. of South Boston. February 8, 2002 Elmer Custer Waltman Elmer Custer Waltman, 66, of 1928 Ringgold Rd., Ringgold, died February 4 at his home. Mr. Waltman was born June 11, 1935, in Halifax County the son of the late Charles Waltman and Virginia Hood Waltman Loftis and was married to Alice Edmonds Waltman. He was a member of Cedar Grove United Methodist Church of Alton and a member of the United Rubber Workers. Mr. Waltman was retired from Goodyear Tire and Rubber Mfg. Co. and was a Veteran of the US Navy. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Neil Custer Waltman of Ringgold and Steven Mitchell Waltman of Gibsonville, N.C.; his stepfather, Stuart Loftis of South Boston; three sisters, Katheryn King of Cluster Springs, Virginia Hackney of South Boston and Mary E. Myrtle Rebecca Wilmouth Wilbourne Myrtle Rebecca Wilmouth Wilbourne, 96, of Salem, died February 6 at Salem. Mrs. Wilbourne was born in Halifax County on January 12, 1906, the daughter of Oscar Thomas Wilmouth and Etta Lucy Gravitt Wilmouth and was married to Henry Elmer Wilbourne Sr. She was a member of Union United Methodist Church, Halifax. February 11, 2002 Evelyn Buchanan Martin Evelyn Buchanan Martin, age 79, of 1200 Guill Town Road, Clover died Friday, February 8, 2002 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Mrs. Martin was born August 28, 1922 in Halifax County. She was the daughter of Howard Buchanan and Effie Snead Buchanan. She was retired assistant manager of Gregory and Martin Grocery, a member of Cover Baptist Church where she was clerk of the church, assistant superintendent and a long time Sunday School teacher. Mrs. Martin is survived by a son: Thomas R. "Tom" Martin, and his wife, Faye, of Clover; a daughter: Gloria M. Langford, and her husband, Thomas, of Scottsburg; son: David R. "Bobby" Martin and his wife, Carol, of Clover; one brother, Charles R. Buchanan and his wife, Ann, of Forrest; ten grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; a dear friend, Marie Simms. She was preceded in death by a sister, Frances Williams; three brothers: Raymond Bose Buchanan; Leonard Buchanan and Thomas Buchanan. Herman Lee "Pee Wee" Womack Herman Lee "Pee Wee" Womack of 1131 Swain Road, Halifax, died February 7, 2002 at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 65. Mr. Womack was born in Halifax County on April 1, 1936 and was the son of the late Johnny B. Womack and Aline Womack. He was married to O'Delia Wood Womack and was a member of the New Vernon Baptist Church. Mrs. Malone was born in New York on July 9, 1922 and was the daughter of the late Frederick Green and Viola Coleman Green. She was married to the late Tom Malone and was a member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church in Washington, DC. She was the owner of Marie's Beauty Salon in Washington, DC and was a former member of Cross Roads Baptist Church. Mrs. Malone is survived by two daughters: Mary Stewart, of Nashville, TN and Nerissa Malone, of Washington, DC; son: Cecil Wayne Malone, of Washington, DC; four grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. Mr. Warren was born in Halifax County on June 21, 1919, the son of Dabney B. Warren Sr. and Lottie Wilkins Warren and was married Hattie Cole Warren. He was a member of Harmony United Methodist Church where he was former co-chairman of the Administrative Board, trustee of the church parsonage, and chairman of the cemetery committee. He was a retired tobacco farmer. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Lanier W. Moore and her husband, Donald of South Boston and Dale W. Bates of Alton; one grandson, Charles A. 'Chuck' Bates V. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Clyde, William, James 'Jimmy' and Wallace Warren; and two sisters, Mattie Baylous and Odell Baylous. Mrs. Martin was born in Halifax County on February 28, 1919, the daughter of the late John Ferris Ridgeway Sr. and Mattie Bomar Ridgeway. She was a member of Childrey Baptist Church and a former employee of Bassett-Walker Co. Survivors include one daughter, Pamela Martin Brightman of Nathalie; two grandchildren, Clinton Neal Martin of Nathalie and Dawn Marie Brightman of Rocky Mount; one brother, William E. Mr. Ahern was twice married; first to the late Ailene Peak Ahern, and then to the late Marjorie Stanton Ahern. He was born in Richmond on October 2, 1919, the son of the late John Ahern and Mary Collins Ahern, and was a retired dispatcher with the Polk County Police Dept. Survivors include one daughter, Marie F. Austin of Nathalie; one grandson, Eddie Austin of Brookneal; one brother, Richard Ahern of Virginia Beach; and one brother-in-law, Randolph Harrison of Richmond. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the service. Hallie Yates Friddle Hallie Yates 'Becky' Friddle, of Louisville, KY., died February 6. She was a graduate of Halifax County High school and attended flight school, and was employed by TWA as a flight attendant. She was a member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church of Vernon Hill. Surviving Mrs. Friddle are her husband, William Friddle; one daughter, Laurn Friddle, and one son, Tray Friddle, all of KY.; her mother, Ruby O. Yates; one brother, William 'Tom' Yates, both of Roanoke. She was preceded in death by her father, William 'Bill' Yates. Memorial services were held February 9 in KY. Burial will be in Mt. Vernon Baptist Church Cemetery. February 15, 2002 William Guy Blevins William Guy Blevins of Danville died February 12 at Danville Regional Medical Center. Mr. Blevins was born on October 24, 1919, in North Wilksboro, NC, the son of Annie Combs and Houston Blevins and was married to Elsie Gibson Blevins. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, a Veteran of WWII having served in the US Army, and was a member of the American Legion Post #325. Mr. Blevins had 29 years of service with Danville Fire Department, retiring as a Captain. Survivors include his wife; three children, Bobbie L. Blevins and wife, Gwendolyn S. of Rockville, Donald G. Blevins and wife, Marlene H. of Danville and Susan Blevins Leonard and husband, George B. of South Boston; five grandchildren, Scott Blevins and Claire B. Hobbie, both of Richmond, Sherri Blevins of Danville, Julie Leonard of Raleigh, N.C. and Andrew Leonard of South Boston; one sister, Delma Jones of Ocala, FL. John Atkins Proffitt Jr. John Atkins Proffitt Jr. of Halifax died February 13. Mr. Proffitt was the son of John A. Proffitt, M.D. and Lucille Gilman Proffitt and was born in Richmond on March 15, 1925. He was married to Nancy Dance Proffitt. He completed an undergraduate degree at The University of Richmond and a Master's degree at Virginia Commonwealth University. He was a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne during WWII. Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Pamela P. McElrath of Richmond and Susan P. Powell of Franklin; one sister, Beverly Ann Proffitt; three grandsons, Bryce H. Powell, Jonathan R. Randolph Jr., 47, formerly of Madisonville, died February 7 at Norfolk General Hospital. Mr. Randolph was born on August 19, 1954, the son of the late Jesse Randolph and Estelle Randolph. He was a graduate of Norfolk State University, was an educator and was also employed by Federal Express. He was the founder of Advance Tower Communications, a company that serves three states. Survivors include his wife, Sylvia; one daughter, Jessica Randolph; one grandson; his mother of Madisonville; one sister, Helen Williams; two brothers, Curtis Randolph and his wife, Louise and Albert Randolph and wife, Jean; and his mother-in-law. February 18, 2002 Elgie Cortez Boyd Elgie Cortez Boyd, 15, of Clover entered died suddenly Wednesday, February 13 in Halifax County. Mr. Boyd was born in Prince George County, Md. April 14, 1986. He was a tenth grade student at Halifax County High School and attended Harpers Temple Apostolic Church in Clarksville. Tom Cook Tom Cook, 93, of Nathalie died February 18 at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was born in Halifax County on May 9, 1908, the son of the late Jennie Rice Cook and the late Pledge Cook. Survivors include two sons, John Cook of Gretna and Thomas Cook of East Orange, NJ; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Annie Pannell of Pittsburg, PA. Mabel Virginia Martin Mabel Virginia Martin, 74, died February 17 at Raritan Bay Medical, Old Bridge Division. Mrs. Martin was born in Philadelphia, PA. She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of American Legion Post 485. Survivors include her husband, Joseph Martin of Spotswood; four sons, Howard Welch of Barnegat Light, John Welch of Woodbridge, Joseph Martin Jr. of Thomasville, NC, and Kenneth Martin of New York City; one daughter, Debra Jarosz of South Amboy; one brother, Lester Saunders of Delray Beach, FL; four sisters, Mildred Kilgore of Tampa, FL, Virginia Vaughn of South Boston, Gloria Oliver and Patricia Jarrett, both of Danville; six grandchildren, Jamie Jarosz, Kelly Jarosz, Christopher Welch, Patrick Welch, Joey Martin and Nicole Martin; and one great-grandchild, Brianna Gonzalez. Virginia Glass Garber Virginia Glass Garber, 65, of 11215 River Road, South Boston, died February 22 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Mrs. Garber was born in Halifax County on December 13, 1936, the daughter of Noel F. Glass and Ruth Blanks Glass and was married to Norman W. Garber. She was a member of Arbor Baptist Church. William Dingle William Dingle, 69, of 729 Lincoln Drive, South Boston, died February 23 at Twin Oaks Nursing Home. Mr. Dingle was born in Baltimore, MD. on August 18, 1932, the son of the late Eddie Dingle and Melissa Dingle. He was married to Helena Tucker Dingle and was a member of Emanuel Seventh Day Adventist Church. Survivors include his wife; four sons, Leon Dingle, James Dingle and Alvin Dingle, all of Towson, MD, and Charles Dingle of Durham, NC; three brothers, Joe Dingle and Isaiah Dingle, both of SC, and Harry Dingle of Baltimore; his stepmother, Sue Dingle of SC; one stepdaughter, Norma Jean Meadows of South Boston; 13 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren. February 27, 2002 Frances Lynn Thompson Frances Lynn Thompson, 73, of 3029 Cluster Springs Road, South Boston died February 24 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Ms. Thompson was born in Halifax County on March 2, 1928, the daughter of the late Calvin Arthur Thompson and Clarice Loftis Thompson. She was a member of Black Walnut Baptist Church. Ola Mayhew Ferrell Ola Mayhew Ferrell, 89, of 103 Rosehill Drive, South Boston died February 23 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Mrs. Ferrell was born in Halifax County on June 2, 1912, the daughter of Jesse W. Mayhew and Lizzie West Mayhew and was married to Garland Flenroy Ferrell. She was a member of Dan River Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Carroll O. Ferrell of Portsmouth and Roy J. Ferrell of Opelika, AL.; and five grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; and four brothers, David, Willie, Guy and Clarence Mayhew. Barbara Mathie Chinnery Barbara Mathie Chinnery, 77, of 1163 John Henry Brown Road, Clover, died February 24 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Mrs. Chinnery was born in Glasgow, Scotland on February 15, 1925, the daughter of Gavin Mathie and Helen Phillips Mathie. She was of the Catholic Faith. Survivors include two daughters, Helen Riddick of Palm Desert, CA. and Barbara Jean Clay of Clover; one brother, Ian Mathie of New York, NY; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Haywood Renn Evans Haywood Renn Evans, 81, of Henderson, NC, died February 19 at his home. Born in Vance County, NC, he was the son of the late Thomas John Evans and Margaret Renn Evans Croom and was first married to Mary Newman Evans and later to Ann Starkey Evans and Lessie Burgess Evans. Mr. Evans was a retired carpenter, and a retired security guard with Allied Security, Inc., in Raleigh, NC. He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose in Henderson. Survivors are his wife; a brother, Donald Powell Evans of Greenville, TN; a stepdaughter, Brenda Thaxton Platt of Madison, NC; a stepson, John W. Thaxton of Greensboro, NC; and two grandsons. James Edward Harris James Edward Harris, 72, of 5192 East Hyco Road, South Boston died February 23 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Mr. Harris was born in Halifax County on September 8, 1929, the son of the late William Harris and Lottie Murphy Harris and was married to Ann Ragland Harris. He was a member of Blue Wing Grove Baptist Church, was an Army Veteran having served in Korea and Vietnam, and was a member of American Legion Post #99. Ray Garland Creasy Jr. Ray Garland Creasy Jr., 52, of 1050 Hardie Lane, Halifax died February 24 at Duke University Medical Center. Mr. Creasy was born in Halifax County on March 18, 1949, the son of the late Ray Garland Creasy Sr. and Etta Conner Creasy. He was an Army Veteran and a member of Vietnam Veterans of America. Aubrey Lewis Anderson Aubrey Lewis Anderson, 81, of 5225 Hunting Creek Road, Nathalie died February 25 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Mr. Anderson was born in Halifax County on December 24, 1920, the son of the late Nathan Comer Anderson and Myrtle Hardie Anderson and was married to Sarah Conner Anderson. He was a member of Hunting Creek Baptist Church, a Mason with Kerns Lodge, Crystal Hill and Woodmen of the World #106, Nathalie. Survivors include his wife; four sons, James Aubrey Anderson and wife, Anne of Buffalo Junction, Jackie Conner Anderson and wife, Judy, David Ray Anderson, Ricky Lynn Anderson and wife, Betty, all of Nathalie; two granddaughters, Elizabeth A. Jones and husband, Steve of Midlothian and Susan A. Williams and husband, Mark of Matthews, NC; four great-grandchildren, Sandra and Sarah Jones of Midlothian and Sydney and Cooper Williams of Matthews; one sister, Edna Mae Bagley and husband, Wilson of Kenbridge; two brothers, Dewey H.
