McMichael Anna Virginia Muse McMichael, 80, of New York died March 22 at the Lincoln Hospital in Bronx, NY. Mrs. McMichael was born in Halifax County on December 2, 1921, the daughter of Andrew Muse and Hallie Lee Muse and was married to Thalease McMichael. She was a member of New Zion Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Georgie Anna Olivero of NY; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Selena Gomes Vernon Hill, Esther Murray and Regina Crawford, both of NY. Funeral services for Mrs. McMichael were held March 30 at 1 p.m. at New Zion Baptist Church, Chatham Road, with the Rev. Willie N. Yancy conducting the services. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Alice Elizabeth Ford 'Betsy' Gravitt Alice Elizabeth Ford "Betsy" Gravitt, 74, of 4052 Kingwoods Road, Virgilina, died yesterday, March 31, at her home. Mrs. Gravitt was born in Halifax County on August 21, 1927, the daughter of the late Jimmy D. Ford and Pearl Ratliff Ford, and was married to the late Dallas Arron Gravitt. She was a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church and the American Legion Post 337 Auxiliary in Virgilina. Survivors include four sons, Bobby D. Gravitt of Virgilina, Kirk D. Gravitt of Boydton, D. Carlton Gravitt of South Boston and James H. Gravitt of Summerfield NC; one sister, Carrie F. Pool of Clarksville; and eight grandchildren. Funeral services for Mrs. Gravitt will be held tomorrow, April 2, at 2 p.m. at Shady Grove United Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Davidson conducting the services. Howard Thomas Lovelace Howard Thomas Lovelace, 59, of North Main Street, Halifax, died March 29 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Mr. Lovelace was born in Halifax County on November 21, 1942, the son of the late Thomas Howard Lovelace and Frances Robertson Lovelace. He was married to Mabel Coleman Lovelace. Mr. Lovelace was a member of Trinity Baptist Church. He was a former employee of the Halifax County Sheriff's Department and a United States Army veteran. Mr. Lovelace is survived by his wife, Mabel Lovelace; two daughters, Miss Tabatha Lovelace and Miss Monique Lovelace, both of Alexandria; three sisters, Ms. Mattie Lovelace of Atlantic City, New Jersey, Mrs. Sarah Fountain and Mrs. Beulah Ford, both of South Boston; six brothers, James Edward Lovelace III of Philadelphia, Pa., Gerald Lovelace of Atlantic City, NJ, and Carrol Lovelace of Gaithersburg, Md., Dwight Lovelace of Campbell, California, Garry Lovelace of Atlantic City, NJ, and Brian Lovelace of South Boston; his mother-in-law, Mrs. Lola Coleman of Halifax; four sisters-in-law; six brothers-in-law; four aunts; one uncle; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Bailey Highway, Nathalie, died March 30 at his home. He was married to Virginia Younger Beale. Mr. Beale was born in Halifax County on February 11, 1918, the son of the late Charlie Joel Beale and Anna Owen Beale. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Republican Grove. Mr. Beale is survived by his wife, Virginia Beale of Nathalie, and three daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Anna and James Evans of Greenwood, SC., Sandra and Joe Pete Wells of Dinwiddie and Debbie and Chuck Cox of Forest. Other survivors include four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, one brother, Deroy Beale of Richmond, and one sister, Blanche Booker of Gretna. Ron Sterling Wilmouth Mr. Ron Sterling Wilmouth, 29, of 1027 Flashback St., Halifax, died March 31 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Mr. Wilmouth was born in Halifax County on July 18, 1972, the son of Ronald Wayne Wilmouth and Linda Conner Francis and was married to Shannon Vicks Wilmouth. He attended McGees Mill Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Shannon Vicks Wilmouth of Halifax; one daughter, Alyssa Kathryn Wilmouth of Scottsburg; one stepson, Dustin Dean McGregor of South Boston; his mother and stepfather, Linda and Jimmy Francis of Scottsburg; his father, Ronald W. The family will recieve friends at Powell Funeral Home Monday, April 1, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Betty Mobley Long Dr. Betty Mobley Long, 67, retired professor of education at East Carolina University, died Saturday, March 30, 2002, at her home. Dr. Long, a native of Cluster Springs, Va., received the B.S. and M.A. Degrees from East Carolina University and the doctorate from Duke University. Her specialties were Reading, Language Arts and Dactylology. She had extensive teaching experience in North Carolina and Virginia schools and was a supervisor in the Washington, NC, city schools before coming to East Carolina University. She retired from East Carolina in 1993. Dr. Long held memberships in Delta Kappa Gamma, the National Education Association, North Carolina Association of Educators and the South Atlantic Philosophy of Education Society. She was a reading consultant for many schools and served as a Reading Laboratory Director for East Carolina. Survivors include one nephew, Edwin Long Jr., of Halifax; one niece, Linda Link of South Boston; one great nephew and niece, Edwin Long III and Lisa Whit, both of Halifax; and a number of other relatives and friends. April 3, 2002 Mabel Barksdale Garrett Mabel Barksdale Garrett, 58, of Bronx, NY died March 26 at Lenox Hill Hospital in NY. Mrs. Garrett was born in Halifax County on November 16, 1943, the daughter of Mollie Barksdale and Coley Barksdale. Survivors include her husband, Milton Garrett; one son, Wilson Garrett of Bronx, her mother of Bronx, one sister, Marion Carrington of Bronx; and one brother, Coley Barksdale of Zebulon, NC. Funeral services for Mrs. Garrett were held April 2 at 1 p.m. at Ellis Creek Baptist Church in Nathalie with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. Rodney Forrest officiated. James Wendell Webber James Wendell Webber, 60, of Drakes Branch, died March 28. Mr. Webber was born April 14, 1941 in Rahway, NJ. He was preceded in death by his parents, Verlie and Gracie Webber; a brother, Phillip Webber; and his first wife, Patricia D. Webber. Survivors include his wife, Ellie Webber; and children of Ellie; also leaves behind his ex-wife, Roberta Webber Sumner and children; one son, Phillip J. Alease Clarke Fisher Alease Clarke Fisher, 68, of 1062 Thornton-Jim Trail, Nathalie, died March 31 at her home. Mrs. Fisher was born in Halifax County on December 14, 1933, the daughter of Earlie Clarke and Essie Roark Clarke and was married to Barkley L. Fisher. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Millstone where she taught Sunday school, was a member of the WMU, member of North Halifax Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, EMT with North Halifax VFD, was named Farm Woman of the Year 2002 by the Farm Bureau, member of Halifax Farm Bureau Woman's Committee and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Survivors include her husband; four daughters, Nancy F. Shook of Keysville, Charlotte F. Davis of Nathalie, Bonnie F. Carson of Gladys and Patsy F. Ray of Richmond; one son, Barry C. Fisher of Nathalie; two sisters, Norma Lee Maggard of Petersburg and Betsy Clarke of Nathalie; two brothers, Jimmy Clarke of Missouri City, Texas and Louis Clarke of Nathalie; and 10 grandchildren. Larry Junior Womack Larry Junior Womack, 48, Timberlake, NC, formerly of Halifax, died March 31 at his home. Mr. Womack was born in Halifax County on March 21, 1954, the son of Isabelle Edmonds Womack and Fleantol Womack. He was a member of New Vernon Baptist Church. Survivors include one daughter, Kimberly Womack of Timberlake; his mother of Halifax; two sisters, Lorraine Boxley of Halifax and Dorraine Hogue of South Boston; three brothers, Dennis, Kenneth and Charles Womack, all of Halifax; two stepchildren, Lisa Penick of Yanceyville, NC and Chris Penick of roxboro, NC; three step-grandchildren; and his best friend and former wife, Virginia Womack Coleman of Timberlake. Mrs. Gilliland was born in Norfolk on March 14, 1910, the daughter of Laura Lee Carter Hundley and Maury Hundley. She was educated in Essex County schools and was a graduate of Lynchburg College. She was married to Charles Trent Gilliland, who preceded her in death. Survivors include one son, Trent Hundley Gilliland; one grandson, Trent Hundley Gilliland Jr.; two sisters, Laura Lee Thomas of Little Rock, AK and Garnett Beckman of Phoenix, AZ; two brothers, Chaplain (Colonel) Maury Hundley, USA (R) of Roanoke and Lt. Colonel Charles Proctor Hundley, USAF (R) of St. Petersburg, FL. Mrs. Gilliland was a Home Economist for the local power company. After retiring she taught the third grade at Washington-Coleman Elementary School. She was a member of First Baptist Church of South Boston, where she taught Sunday school, both young and adults. Mrs. Gilliland assisted in organizing the first young people's Sunday school department. She was active in Women's Missionary Society, having served as president twice. She was a member of the local DAR and was also active in the Women's Club of South Boston. April 8, 2002 Charlie Graham Gentry Charlie Graham Gentry, 82, of Roxboro, NC, died April 4 at Duke University Medical Center. Born in Person County, NC, he was the son of the late John Roberson and Margaret Carver Gentry and was the husband of the late Anne Howerton Gentry. Mr. Gentry retired from Collins & Aikman Corp., served with the Person County Sheriff's Department as a sergeant where he oversaw the Deputy Reservists. He was a WWII Navy Veteran having served on the USS Randolph where he witnessed the unconditional surrender of the Japanese. Mr. Gentry was a member of the VFW and a member of North Roxboro Baptist Church. Survivors include three daughters, Wilda Reaves, Carol A. Gentry and Charlene Gentry, all of Roxboro; four sisters, Lottie Melton, Margaret Painter, Geraldine Holder and Peggy Clayton, all of Roxboro; six grandchildren, Amanda Clayton, Steve Gentry, Michelle R. Sylvia Sarah Sneed Jones Mrs. Sylvia Sarah Sneed Jones, 87, of 1244 Jones Trail, Vernon Hill died Saturday at her home. Mrs. Jones was born in Halifax County on January 5, 1915, to Arthur Manley Sneed and Mattie Belle Culley Sneed. She was married to the late James Howard Jones Sr. Mrs. Jones was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the WMU. Survivors include: one daughter, Linda Jones Whitlow of Danville; four sons, Robert Richard (Bob) Jones of Alton, Giles Edwin Jones of Vernon Hill, Jerry Matthew Jones of Arrons Creek, and Robert Richard (Bobby) Jones of Vernon Hill; one sister, Ruby S. Mrs. Tucker was born in Halifax County on June 18, 1929, the daughter of the late Lizzie Barbour and the late Bossie Barbour. Survivors include two daughters, Ernell Hudson and Darlene Taylor of Wilmington; one son, Timothy Miller of Wilmington; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Violet Layne of Wilmington; and one brother, B.C. Born in Cluster Springs, he had been a resident of Sebring since 1964, coming from Lynchburg. He was a postal carrier, served in the US Army during WWII, and was a member of the American Legion in Avon Park, FL. He was also a member of First United Methodist Church in Avon Park. Survivors include his wife, Edith Gravitt Dixon; three sons, Harvey Luck Dixon Jr. of Sebring, Kenneth Gravitt Dixon of Kissimmee, FL and Allan D. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Chaffin and daughter, Susan Maxey. Mrs. Cole was born in Philadelphia, PA on June 28, 1912, the daughter of Charles D. Grafton and Edith Mae Grafton and was married to Charles Edward Cole. She attended First Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Clarksville Chapter 145. Bessie McLaughlin Fitzgerald Mrs. Bessie McLaughlin Fitzgerald of Henry Mill Road died Thursday, April 11, 2002, at her home. Mrs. Fitzgerald was born in Pittsylvania County on December 10, 1914, and was 87 years of age at the time of her death. She was the daughter of the late John P. McLaughlin and the late Carrie Mayo McLaughlin. She was married to the late William T. Fitzgerald. Mrs. Fitzgerald was a member of the Shockoe Baptist Church. She is survived by five daughters; Maragret Dixon-Daniel, Carrie Womack, both of Halifax, Clara Vaden of Chatham, Mable Guy of Java and Carolyn King of Philadelphia; one son; William I. Fitzgerald of Vernon Hill; one sister, Hattie M. Thompson of Ringgold; 35 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends. Garland Winford Glass Garland Winford Glass, 75, of Lynchburg, died Saturday, April 13 at his residence. He was the husband of Lois Woodson Glass. Mr. Glass was born in Halifax County January 23, 1927, the son of the late Noel and Ruth Blanks Glass. He was a U.S. Navy veteran, having served in W.W. II, and was retired from General Electric. He was a member of Beulah Baptist Church. Mr. Glass was preceded in death by three sisters, Redecca Stanley, Mildred Davis and Virginia Garber. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Eugene Garland Glass of Lynchburg, a daughter, Brenda Glass Brumback and her husband, Richard Brumback Jr. of Manassas, a brother, James Henry Glass and a sister, Jane McBride, both of Halifax, and three grandchildren. USAF (retired), died Thursday, April 11, 2002, at the Richmond VA Medical Center. He was born in Mt. Airy, N.C., and had been a Hampton resident from 1948 until moving to Clarksville in 1983. Mr. Flippin retired in 1970 from the USAF after 23 years of service, including tours of duty in the Korean Conflict and Vietnam. He then worked in civil service at Fort Pickett, retiring in 1979. John Henry 'Buck' Chandler Sr. John Henry 'Buck' Chandler Sr., 71, of 6209 Hunting Creek Road, Nathalie, died April 22 at The Medical College of Virginia Hospital in Richmond. Mr. Chandler was born in Halifax County on May 30, 1930, the son of Joe Chandler and Lillian Chandler Penick, and was married to Daisy Cousins Chandler. He was a member of Ellis Creek Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Mildred Britton, Odessa Chandler and Vera Chandler, all of Nathalie, and Cheryl Chandler of Richmond; two sons, John H. Chandler Jr. of Clover and Darryl Chandler of Nathalie; four sisters, Dorothy Howard and Ernestine Phillips, both of New York, Denise Stewart of Clover and Leola Carden of Augusta, GA; six brothers, Grant Chandler, Alexander Penick and Andre' Penick, all of Nathalie, James Chandler and Eddie 'Billie' Penick, both of New York and William Penick of South Boston; and six grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one grandson, Jason Chandler and one sister, Edith Croaker. Funeral services for Mr. Chandler will be held April 27 at 1 p.m. at Bethel Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Roosevelt Freeman Roosevelt Freeman, 64, of Nathalie died April 22 in Charlottesville. Survivors include one sister, Doris H. Marshall of Nathalie; three brothers, Clinton Freeman of Albany, NY, Dorsey Freeman of Richmond and Lafayette Freeman of Nathalie; two sisters-in-law, Nannie and Sylvia Freeman; one brother-in-law, Albert Caddle Sr.; and a devoted friend, Johnnie Mae Miller. Tony Baretta Smith Tony Baretta Smith, 27, of 2150 Sinai Road, South Boston died April 20 from injuries received in an accident. Mr. Smith was born in Halifax County on March 12, 1975, the son of Billy Lee Smith Sr. and Mary Elizabeth Fountain Smith. He was married to Monica Jackson Smith. Survivors include his wife; three children, Dayquan B. Smith, Dalisha Smith and Fantavia Jackson; five sisters Dorothy Lee Fountain of Baltimore, MD, Diane Hargrove of South Boston, Amy Gregory and Katina Gregory, both of Clarksville and Chris Fountain of New York; two brothers, Douglas Fountain and Billy Lee Smith Jr., both of South Boston; his mother-in-law, Mary Faulkner of Burlington, NC; and his father-in-law, Robert Jackson Sr. of Scottsburg. April 29, 2002 Elizabeth Milton Anderson Mrs. Elizabeth Milton Anderson, of Rabat Road of Nathalie, died April 26 at her home. She was 90 years old at the time of her death. Mrs. Anderson was born in Halifax County on December 19, 1911, the daughter of John W. Milton and Fannie Whitlow Milton. She was married to James Gettis Anderson and was a member of the Catawba Baptist Church. Elizabeth Milton Anderson is survived by one brother, George Milton of Gladys; two daughters, Lois V. Anderson and Lorene A. Francis of Nathalie; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Services for Mrs. Elizabeth Milton Anderson were held yesterday, April 28, at 2 p.m. at the Catawba Baptist Church, with the Rev. Michael O'Shea conducting the service. Randy Thomas Crenshaw A funeral service for Randy Thomas Crenshaw, 51, of South Boston will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Dan River Baptist Church with burial in the church cemetery The Rev. Dr. Lynn Marstin, the Rev. Paul King, the Rev. Dr. Melvin Bradshaw and the Rev. Mike Osbourne will conduct the service. Mr. Crenshaw died Saturday at the Medical College of Virginia Hospital. He was born in Halifax County on October 7, 1950, a son of Herman Rodger Crenshaw and Mrs. Beulah Puryear Crenshaw. He was married to Deborah Thompson Crenshaw. Mr. Crenshaw was a member and deacon of Dan River Baptist Church, where he was also a youth leader. He is survived by his wife, Deborah T. Crenshaw, one daughter, Michelle "Nickie" Crenshaw, and two sons, Michael Wayne Crenshaw and Ryan Thomas Crenshaw, all of South Boston. One grandchild survives. Mr. Crenshaw is also survived by his mother, Beulah P. Crenshaw of South Boston, and one brother, Rodger Crenshaw, also of South Boston. He was preceded in death by one brother, Robin Jay Crenshaw. Ida Josephine Davenport Roberts Funeral services for Mrs. Ida Josephine Davenport Roberts, 77, of Scottsburg will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at St. James Baptist Church, with burial in the Davenport family cemetery. The Rev. William McCoy will officiate. Mrs. Roberts, of Lee-Syd-Moore Road in Scottsburg, died Wednesday, April 24, at the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, New York. She was born in Halifax County on July 9, 1924, a daughter of the late Jacob Davenport and Mrs. Florence Buckner Davenport. Mrs. Roberts was a member of St James Baptist Church. She is survived by one daughter, Ms. Lucille V. Winstead, one granddaughter and one great-granddaughter. Mrs. Roberts is also survived by three brothers, Royal Davenport and Edward Davenport of Scottsburg and John Davenport of Philadelphia. Also surviving are six sisters: Mrs. Anna Carter of Scottsburg; Mrs. Rosetta Johnson of Manassas; Mrs. Mary Dixon, Mrs. Dorothy Tyler, Mrs. Edith Sturgis and Ms. Alice Davenport, all of Philadelphia. Other survivors include one brother-in-law, three sisters-in-law and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Kenan Mason Simmons Kenan Mason Simmons, 26, of Joe Jackson Trail, Halifax, died April 23 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Mr. Simmons was born in Washington, DC on March 5, 1976, the son of Thomas Simmons and Sarah Anderson of MD. Survivors include one daughter, Keira Simmons of MD; his parents; maternal grandparents, Mason Anderson and Evelyn Anderson of Halifax; one sister, Arvise Barnhill of MD.
