The Rev. John Eure and the Rev. Leslie Puryear officiated. Burial was at Virgilina Cemetery with military graveside rites. Mr. Brogden died Tuesday at the V.A. Hospital in Salem. An Army veteran, Mr. Brogden was a member of American Legion Post 8, Disabled Veterans, a former member of Virgilina Volunteer Fire Department, a South Boston-Halifax County Museum member and a member of Florence Avenue Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife, Ophelia Wilson Brogden, of South Boston, one daughter, Joy Brogden Butler, and husband Raymond of South Boston, and one son, Ricky A Brogden, and wife Sharon, also of South Boston. Other survivors include one sister, Margaret Humphries, of Oxford, N.C., three granddaughters and three grandsons. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Early P. Brogden and Mary Bell Cash Brogden of South Boston. Jerry Wayne Dean Jerry Wayne Dean, 46, of Richmond, died June 25 at his home. A native of Elwood, Indiana, Dean was born on August 8, 1955, the son of the late Alva Wayne Dean and Patricia "Patty" Baugher Dean, of South Boston. Dean was a retired computer technician for the Richmond Times Dispatch, a member of Community Baptist Church in Richmond and a volunteer with Good Samaritan of Richmond. Dean is survived by his mother, Patricia "Patty" Baugher Dean, and two daughters, Tera Gretchen Dean and Melissa Opal Dean, both of Richmond; three sisters, Cindy Throckmorton and her husband, David, of Scottsburg; Diana Cole and her husband, Danny, of Virgilina; and Jenny Knutti and her husband, Bob, of South Boston; one brother, Tommy Dean and his wife, Elaine, of Scottsburg; six nieces and one nephew. Funeral services for Jerry Wayne Dean were held Sunday, June 30, at 2 p.m., at Grace Baptist Church, with the Rev. Jack Stewart officiating. He was interred in Oak Ridge Cemetery on North Main Street in South Boston. Louis Garner Funeral services for Mr. Louis Garner, 94, were held Sunday, June 30, at the New Shiloh Baptist Church in Nathalie. Burial followed at the church cemetery. Mr. Garner, of Nathalie, died Monday at the Woodview Nursing Home. Born in Halifax County on January 3, 1908, Mr. Garner was a son of the late Lucy Garner and the late Willie Garner. Survivors include three sisters, Mary Wanzer and Alease Williams of Baltimore, Md, and Ozelia Laprade of Philadelphia, Pa.; one aunt, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends. Irene Muse Poteat Irene Muse Poteat, 84, of Manhattan, NY, died June 22 at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Manhattan. Mrs. Poteat was born in Halifax County on July 10, 1917, the daughter of the late George Washington Muse and the late Janie Anderson Muse and was married to Julius Poteat. She was a member of New Zion Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband of Manhattan; four sisters, Emma Bowman of Manhattan, Lillie Mae Tucker and Willie Pearl Dixon, both of Halifax, and Elaine Coleman of Washington, DC. Funeral services for Mrs. Poteat were held June 29 at 2 p.m. at New Zion Baptist Church with Pastor Willie N. Yancey officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. July 3, 2002 Elna Colby 'Patrick' Cecchi Elna Colby 'Patrick' Cecchi, 93, of Walker, MN, died July 1 at the Woodrest Nursing Home in Walker. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Harold; grandson, Gabriel; two sisters, Nan Hand and Jennie Menzies; three brothers, Fred, Earle and Francis Patrick; two nieces and one nephew. Frances Cooley O'Brien Frances Cooley O'Brien, 75, of Clarksville, widow of James Howard O'Brien Jr., died July 1 at her home. Mrs. O'Brien was a graduate of Virginia Tech and a member of Clarksville Presbyterian Church. She was a former long-time member of Chase City Presbyterian Church. Johnson and Jessie Wilson Johnson of South Boston on January 4, 1935. She was a homemaker and long time volunteer for the Brevard Symphony Orchestra. Mrs. Hodges is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Smith of Palmdale, CA; one son Bob Hodges Jr. of Longwood, FL; three grandchildren; one sister, Kaye McGarty of Hilton Head, SC; one brother Leslie Johnson Jr. of Augusta, SC. A Gastonia, North Carolina, native, Mrs. Cole was born October 12, 1937 a daughter of the late George Edward Ayers Sr. and Sue Wynne Ayers. She was married to T. Wesley Cole, deceased. She is survived by one daughter, Denise Cole Takes, and her husband, Jim, of Mississauga, Ontario, and two sons, Thomas Wesley Cole Jr., and his wife, Hope, of Halifax, and Kevin Dean Cole, and his wife, Angela, of Troutville. Wesley Cole A funeral service for T. Wesley Cole, 64, of Virgie Cole Road, is scheduled at 2 p.m. today at Shady Grove United Methodist Church. He was a retired combing plant manager for Burlington Industries, a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church and president of Hyco Road Ruritan Club. A Halifax County native, he was born May 6, 1938 a son of the late Thomas Cole and Frances Conner Cole. He was married to Patsy Ayers Cole, deceased. Mr. Cole is survived by a daughter, Denise Cole Takes of Mississauga, Ontario,, two sons, Thomas Wesley Cole Jr. and his wife, Hope, of Halifax, and Kevin Dean Cole and his wife, Angela of Troutville. Don Davidson will officiate. Mr. Cole, of Virgie Cole Road, died Wednesday at his home. He was the owner/operator of the South Boston Livestock Market, a member of Shady Grove United Methodist Church and president of Percheron Horse Association of Virginia. A Halifax County native, Cole was born March 19, 1946, a son of the late Thomas Cole and Frances Conner Cole. He was married to Linda Newton Cole. Mr. Cole is survived by his wife, Linda Newton Cole of the home, a daughter, Kimberly C. Talbott of Rougemont, N.C., and her husband, Kelly, and three sons, Walter Stanley "Wally" Cole Jr., and his wife, Cindy, of South Boston, Jason D. She was a homemaker and charter member of Buffalo Baptist Tabernacle, Buffalo Junction. She was a member of Catawba Baptist Church. A Halifax County native, she was born February 21, 1964, a daughter of the late Mervin Linn Matze and Caroline Canada Matze. She was married to Allen Lewis of South Boston. Other survivors include three sisters, Vivian M. Kidder of Fayetteville, West Virginia, Amy M. Duncan of Orlando, Florida and Susan M. Cheever of South Boston, and one brother, Melvin Thomas Matze of South Boston. Bruce Walker Murray A graveside service was held Sunday for Bruce Walker Murray, 73, of Murray Road, South Boston, at Shady Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery on East Hyco Road. The Rev. Don Davidson officiated. Mr. Murray died Friday at Duke University Medical Center. A Halifax County native, he was born September 3, 1928, a son of Marie Whitt Murray of South Boston and the late John Robert Murray Sr. He was married to Bettye Layton B. Murray. Survivors also include three daughters, Shawn Jones and Elizabeth Bruce Murray, both of South Boston, and Gaye M. Clifford of Farmville, and two sons, J. Slade Murray of South Boston and Bruce W. Mr. Anderson was born in Halifax County on September 13, 1912, the son of Walter Claude Anderson and Virginia Hudson Anderson and was married to Jeanette Owen Anderson. He was a retired farmer. Lloyd Carter Owen Lloyd Carter Owen, 83, of 11124 River Road, South Boston, died July 8 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Mr. Owen was born in Bedford County on January 2, 1919, the son of William Moorman Owen and Lillian Carter Owen and was married to Penta Turner Owen. Burial will take place in Halifax Memorial Gardens. Col. Richard Cabell Tuck Col. Richard Cabell Tuck, a retired army artillery officer and investment manager, died of multiple causes in INOVA Fairfax Hospital on July 5. Col. Tuck was born in Durham, NC on October 25, 1925, and spent much of his early life in Richmond. He attended the University of Richmond before entering the United States Military Academy at West Point. He graduated in 1946 and later returned there as an instructor in French. Col. Tuck served in a variety of command and staff assignments in Europe, the Pentagon, and in the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. Following his retirement from the army in 1976, he became an investment manager, later forming his own company, Richard Tuck and Associates, in Falls Church. Col. Tuck was a graduate of the Armed Forces Staff College and the French War College, the Ecole Superieure de Guerre, in Paris. He held a Master's degree in Financial Management from George Washington University. Col. Tuck was a descendant of Patrick Henry and served recently as President of the Patrick Henry Society. He was a nephew of William M. Tuck, Governor of Virginia from 1946 to 1950. Survivors include two sisters, Rosella Tuck Davidson of Fredericksburg and Dr. Mary Tuck Echols of Fort Defiance; one brother, Franklin Dandridge Tuck; and a sister-in-law, Faye Royster Tuck of South Boston. She was born in Halifax County on November 19, 1934, the daughter of the late Alex Tucker and Mary Carrington Tucker and was married to the Rev. Harold S. Roberts Sr. Mrs. Roberts was a member of Trinity Baptist Church and was a retired employee of Halifax Regional Hospital. Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Debbie Allen of Portsmouth; five sons, Harold Roberts Jr., Jerry Roberts, Douglas Roberts and Curtis Roberts, all of South Boston, and Craig Roberts of Oxford, NC; nine grandchildren; five sisters, Christine Claiborne and Nancy Walker, both of NY, Mary Tucker of MD, Frances Vass of South Boston and Lucille Tuck of Virgilina; two brothers, Alex Tucker and Samuel Tucker, both of South Boston. Norman Giles Adcock A funeral service for Norman Giles Adcock, 92, of South Boston, will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Powell Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Bill Leonard will conduct the service. Burial will be in Halifax Memorial Gardens. Mr. Adcock died Sunday at The Woodview Nursing Home. An Oxford, North Carolina, native, he was born on June 16, 1910, a son of Robert W. Adcock and Mrs. Betsy Murray Adcock. He was married first to Gladys P. Adcock, then to Rosa Lacks Adcock. He was a member of Grace Baptist Church. Mr. Adcock is survived by five sons: Giles H. Adcock of Fort Walton Beach, Florida; Robert H. Adcock of Danville; Wayne Adcock of Halifax; William Adcock of Hurt; George Adcock of South Boston; and one daughter, Susan Ann Adcock of South Boston. Other survivors include two brothers, Rowland Adcock of Farmville and James Adcock of Oxford, North Carolina. Ten grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and 15 stepchildren also survive. He was born in Rutherford County, N.C., on March 10, 1959, a son of William Rex Marshall and Mrs. Margaret Hamrick Marshall. He was married to Lynn Moore Marshall. Mr. Marshall was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, the Union Ruritan Club, the Jaycees of Forest City, N.C., and attended the Leadership Class of Halifax. He was a member of The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, and was a retired employee of Blaw Knox Corp., Pittsburgh, PA. Survivors include his wife of Ft. Also surviving are one sister, Mrs. Reathie Woody of South Boston, 11 grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Mrs. Dixon was born in Halifax County on May 28, 1933, and was 68 years-of-age at the time of her death. Mrs. Dixon was the daughter of the late George Washington Muse and the late Jannie Anderson Muse and was married to the late Eddie Lewis Dixon. She was a member of the County Line Baptist Church. Mrs. Dixon is survived by four children; Mrs. Sandra Tucker, of Java; Al J. Dixon of Disputanta; Mrs. Angela M. Barley of Dumfries; and Kenneth S. Dixon of the home.
