Mr. Ferguson was born in Halifax County on June 23, 1912, the son of Lonnie B. Ferguson and Kate Chaney Ferguson and was married to the late Ellen Henderson Ferguson. He was a member of Oak Level Presbyterian Church and a charter member of Oak Level Volunteer Fire Department. Survivors include one son, Wayne Ferguson and wife, Nancy of Vernon Hill; one sister, Lena F. Toombs of Halifax; one grandchild, Charles Ferguson and wife, Catherine of Vernon Hill; two great-grandchildren; Travis Wayne Ferguson and Joshua Grey Ferguson, both of Vernon Hill. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Louise F. Moore and Frances F. Henderson. A funeral service for Mrs. Newton was held Sunday afternoon at Powell Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. Dr. Tony Brooks and the Rev. Terry Blevins officiating. Burial was in Bethel Baptist Church cemetery. Mrs. Newton was born in Halifax County on November 23, 1900, a daughter of James Edward Terry and Mrs. Maude Tatum Terry. She was married to Frank Walker Newton. She was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church and the WMU. Mrs. Newton is survived by three daughters, Agnes N. Seay of Halifax, Grace N. Compton of Scottsburg and Catherine N. Royster of South Boston, one son, Henry "Pete" Newton of Halifax, nine grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. Barbara Farmer Saunders Barbara Farmer Saunders, 60, of 5164 Chestnut Road, Nathalie, died August 29, at Virginia Baptist Hospital. Mrs. Saunders was born in Halifax County on October 25, 1941, the daughter of Lawrence Hamilton Farmer and Rebecca Glass Stanley and was married to Louis Edward Saunders. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Republican Grove. Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Rebecca Dale Jennings and husband, Ronnie, and Crystal S. Trickey and husband, Pete, all of Nathalie; one son, Randy Saunders and wife, Sharon M. of Forest; one sister, Iris Mitchell and husband, John of Hopewell; two brothers, L.H. September 4, 2002 Dr. Henry Broadus Daniel Jr. Dr. Henry Broadus Daniel Jr., 69, of Timberville, died August 1 at Rockingham Memorial Hospital. He was born June 27, 1933, at Danville and was raised in the home of his late grandmother, Sally Green Daniel of Danville. Mr. Daniel was employed in the supervisory veterinary medical office of the USDA-FSIS-IO. He was a graduate of the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and the University of Georgia School of Veterinary Medicine. Surviving are his wife, the former Sharon Buchanan; children and spouses, Amy Leigh and Michael Perrier of New Market, Kelley and Owen Lewis of Halifax, Henry and Lydia Daniel of Alton, Charles and Anne Daniel of Newport News, Martin Daniel of Virginia Beach; one brother, Curtis W. Tony David Estes Sr. Tony David 'Rabbit' Estes Sr., 44, of 607 Cedar Avenue, South Boston, died September 2 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Mr. Estes was born in Halifax County on January 20, 1958, the son of the late Thomas Briggs Estes and Eleanor Cliborne Howerton. He was a member of the South Boston Jaycees and American Legion Post 8. He was employed by Thomas Brothers Body Shop. Survivors include one son, Tony David 'T.D.' Emmett Clifton Lewis Sr. Emmett Clifton Lewis Sr., 69, of 8200 Mountain Road, Halifax, died September 3 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Mr. Lewis was born in Halifax County on April 16, 1933, the son of Errol Linwood Lewis and Virgie Elizabeth Satterfield Lewis and was married to Lissie Mae Newby Lewis. He was a member of Arbor Baptist Church where he was a deacon and head of the building and grounds committee, a member of WOW Lodge 106 in South Boston, a member of AARP, was the building official for the county of Halifax, and was a Korean Conflict Army Veteran. Survivors include his wife; two sons, E.C. September 6, 2002 Ada Rogers Dance Ada Rogers Dance, 93, of South Boston, died September 3 at Beth Israel Hospital in Hillside, NJ. Mrs. Dance was born in Halifax County on December 26, 1908, the daughter of the late James Rogers and Millie Harris Rogers and was married to the late Deacon Rufus Dance. She was a member of Dan River Bethel Baptist Church. Survivors include her children, Eva Lawson of South Boston, Sadie Drumwright of Paterson, NJ, Jean Crawley of Chesapeake, Sylvia Whitt of Hillside, NJ, Garfield Dance of Paterson, Roosevelt Dance and Rufus Dance of Burlington, NJ; 23 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Kyle Watson Bowie Kyle Watson Bowie died September 3. He was born November 1, 1924, in Roanoke to Kyle W. Bowie Sr. and Catherine Cheatham Bowie, and was first married to Katherine Elizabeth Niblo, and later to Marie Foster. He graduated from West Point. Mr. Bowie was assigned to Japan. While there he was awarded the CIB and Purple Heart. In 1965 as Battalion Commander, he was assigned to Vietnam. In the first six months he was engaged in a number of heavy battles and was awarded two Silver Stars, plus a number of other decorations and the Battalion received a Distinguished Unit Citation. After returning to the states, he was promoted to Colonel before returning to Vietnam. Mr. Bowie retired in 1975, and moved to Halifax County. He was on the Board of Trustees for the Patrick Henry Memorial Foundation. Survivors include his wife; his daughter, Kay and husband, Tom Scovill; one grandson, Daniel and wife, Isavane; one granddaughter, Hope Scovill; one stepson, Lou and wife, Laurie Foster; one stepdaughter, Amy and husband, Ted Humphrey; and six grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by one son, Samuel Walter Watson Bowie. Graveside services for Mr. Bowie will be held today, September 6, at 11 a.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church Cemetery with Military Rites. Lillian 'T' Carr Coleman Lillian 'T' Carr Coleman, 51, of Hyattsville, MD, formerly of Halifax County, died September 2 in MD. Mrs. Coleman was born in Halifax County on May 1, 1951, the daughter of Herman Carr Sr. and Hattie Dance Carr. She was a member of Banister Hill Baptist Church. Survivors include one daughter, Yolanda Sumter of Charleston, SC; two sons, Charles Julious Graves of Freehold, NJ and Christopher Graves of Hyattsville; three sisters, Elnora Hogan of Fayetteville, NC, Dorothy Coleman of Dover, DE and Vivian Graves of Halifax; four brothers, Earle Carr of Stoneville, NC, Herman Carr Jr. of Lexington, NC, Frank Carr and the Rev. James Edmond Sawyer James Edmond Sawyer, 89, of Scottsburg, died September 2 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Washington, DC. Mr. Sawyer was born in Halifax County on March 5, 1913, the son of the late Sandy L. Sawyer and Colie Crews Sawyer and was married to Mildred Hardy Sawyer. He was a member of Piney Grove Baptist Church, was a WWII Army Veteran and was a member of American Legion Post #99, and the Mt. Sinai Masonic Lodge. Survivors include one son, James A. Sawyer of Roanoke; one daughter, Judy Virginia Worrell of St. Pleasant, MD; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one daughter-in-law, Sarah P. Sawyer; and one son-in-law, Paul Worrell. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Thelma Sawyer, and one granddaughter, Rayzelle Worrell. Mr. Blanks was born on July 8, 1937, and was husband of Eleanor Crowder Blanks. Mr. Blanks grew up in Clarksville, was a member of Gravel Hill Baptist Church and attended Fork Union Military Academy. He worked all of his adult life in automobile sales management and was a previous owner of several automobile dealerships. Funeral service will be conducted 11 a.m. Saturday at Gravel Hill Baptist Church with interment in the church cemetery. Mrs. Waldie was born in Halifax County on March 6, 1935, the daughter of William Archer Lloyd and Ada Nola Wilkins Lloyd. She was a member of Providence Presbyterian Church. Melvin Jackson Featherston Halifax County native Melvin Jackson "Dennis" Featherston of Hampton died Friday at Sentara-Hampton General Hospital in Hampton. Mr. Featherston was 48. He was born March 27, 1954, a son of the late Ms. Alice Featherston and was a member of the Dan River Bethel Baptist Church. Mr. Featherston is survived by two sons, Wesley Featherston of Danville and Ryan Montaque of Norfolk, four daughters, Mrs. Cynthia Johnson and Ms. Wanda Featherston, both of Chesapeake, Ms. Terry Featherston of Hampton and Miss Veronica Montaque of Norfolk. Twelve grandchildren survive. Also surviving are three sisters, Mrs. Catherine Medley of Alton, Mrs. Carolyn Jones of Crystal Hill and Ms. Jean Ellen Featherston of South Boston, one half-sister, Mrs. Brenda Moore of Hampton, and three brothers, George Thomas Featherston of Louisiana, Henry Featherston of Alton and Wayne Anthony Featherston of South Boston. Mr. Jones was the son of Alonzo Jones Sr. and Barbara Dunkley Jones. Survivors include his parents of Nathalie; two sisters, Emma Dunkley of Brookneal and Samantha Jones of Nathalie; one brother, Joseph Jones of Nathalie; and his grandmother, Lowrine Jennings Jones of Nathalie. Fred Lester Campbell Fred Lester Campbell, 70, of 1312 Bernard Street, South Boston, died September 10, at his home. Mr. Campbell was born in High Point, NC, on March 15, 1932, the son of Vester Lee Campbell and Ila Cross Campbell and was married to Jerri Teaney Campbell. He was a member of First Baptist Church of South Boston. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Bill Campbell and wife, Susan of Virginia Beach, and Greg Campbell and wife, Tania of Dallas, GA; two daughters, Fredie Brady and husband, Michael of Coral Springs, FL, and Sandra Rae Campbell of Virginia Beach; seven grandchildren; and one sister, Irene Seltz of High Point, NC. September 13, 2002 Alvah Parrish Bohannon Jr. Alvah Parrish Bohannon Jr., 92, of Altavista, died September 10. He was born August 23, 1920 in Virgilina, the son of the late Dr. Alvah P. Bohannon and Annie Crowell Bohannon and was married to Dorothy Deans Bohannon. Mr. Bohannon was a member of Lane Memorial United Methodist Church where he served as treasurer and chairman for the church's official board. He was an alumnus of Hampden-Sydney College, and served in the Medical Corps of the US Navy during WWII. He went to Altavista in 1935, and founded Altavista Motors, Inc. in 1937 with Sam Tune, where he worked until his retirement in 1986. He was a past director on the Board of Directors for the Campbell County School Board and a past president of the Altavista Lions Club. Survivors of Mr. Bohannon include one son, Alvah P. Bohannon III; two daughters, Rebecca B. Lanier and Dorothy A. Bohannon; one sister, Virginia B. Bailey; and four grandchildren, Courtney B. Warren, Jason R. Lanier, Brooke C. Bohannon, and Kendall A. Lanier. He was preceded in death by a brother, James H. Bohannon, and a sister, Rebecca B. McKinney. Bane, 81, of 2150 Loop Road, Vernon Hill, died Friday, September 27 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Born March 4, 1921, in Halifax County, he was the son of John Jinks Bane and Birda Carol Moorefield Bane. Mr. Bane was a retired merchant, television repairman, and farmer. He was a member of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII receiving a Presidential promotion to Chief Petty Officer for meritorious conduct in action. Mr. Bane was a member of the Halifax Masonic Lodge #96 A.F. & A.M., served as an ASCS committee member and was a Charter Member of the Oak Level Volunteer Fire Department. Juanita Epps Shields A Halifax County native and the first woman to serve as the Clerk of Circuit Court in Lynchburg, Juanita Epps Shields, 65, died Saturday at her home in Lynchburg. A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Tuesday at Tharp Funeral Home in the Chapel with the Rev. Mike Dodson and Dr. Elwood Seamster of Clover, S.C., officiating. Burial will follow at Virginia Memorial Park in Forest. Mrs. Shields was born in Halifax County on September 21, 1937, a daughter of the late Walter Thomas Epps Sr. and the late Mable Arendall Epps. She was married to Paul B. Shields for 31 years. She was a 1956 graduate of Halifax County High School, where she was a member of the National Honor Society. She attended Radford University. Mrs. Shields began her career as a Deputy Clerk in the Lynchburg Circuit Court Clerk's Office in February 1960. In November 1979, she was elected by public vote to serve as Clerk for an eight-year term, and she was re-elected in her second bid. She retired in 1991 after 32 years of service. She was a member of the Virginia Court Clerk's Association, an honorary member of the Lynchburg Bar Association and a member of the Lynchburg Charter Chapter of the American Business Woman's Association, which she had served as president. She was elected the ABWA Woman of the Year in 1977. She was a member and former church clerk of Inglewood Baptist Church. In addition to her husband, Paul, she is survived by one son, Scott Shields, and his wife, Karen, of Rustburg; three daughters, Darlene Simile and her husband, Nick, Anne Reynolds and her husband, Paul, all of Lynchburg, Lisa Turner and her husband, Mark, of Huddleston; one stepson, Darrell Shields, and his wife, Wylene, of Madison Heights; one stepdaughter, Carolyn Newsome of Rustburg; one brother, Ronnie Epps, and his wife, Anne, of Rustburg; two sisters, Peggy Palmer and Kitty Hayslett, both of Lynchburg; ten grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, W.T. Epps Jr. and William Lee Epps, both of Halifax.
