C. McCraw Dorothy Taylor Crawley McCraw, 75, of 7015 Philpott Road, South Boston, died November 28 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Mrs. McCraw was born in Roanoke on April 24, 1927, the daughter of the late Henry Taylor and Ora Cunningham Taylor Hughes and was married to Abner McCraw. She was a member of The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, and was a retired teacher from the Halifax County Public School System. Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Valerie McCraw of South Boston; five sons, Derrick McCraw of Norfolk, Douglas McCraw of Greensboro, NC, Vidner Dennis McCraw of Virginia Beach, Vaughan McCraw of South Boston and Vyron David McCraw of Phoenix, AZ.; two sisters, Laurence Nolan of Potomac, MD and Dottie Thomas of Upper Marboro, MD; and eight grandchildren. Memorial services for Mrs. McCraw will be held today, December 2 at 1 p.m. at The Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses with her son, Derrick McCraw, and Andre' Jordan officiating. Gene Satterfield Albert 'Gene' Eugene Satterfield, 60, of 769 Laurel Grove Road, Sutherlin, died November 29 in the Stratford Health Care Center. Mr. Satterfield was born September 21, 1942, in Pittsylvania County, the son of the late Atlas Eugene Satterfield and the late Ella Dodson Satterfield, and was married to Sybil Elaine Jones. He was a member of Laurel Grove Baptist Church and was a life member of Laurel Grove Fire and Rescue Department where he had served as assistant chief and as chief. Mr. Satterfield was selected as Fireman of the Year on numerous occasions and Fireman of the Decade for 1988-1998. He was retired from Corning Corporation. Survivors include his wife of the home; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Albert 'Al' Eugene Satterfield and wife, Patti, of Sutherlin, and James 'Jamie' Harold Satterfield of Bel Air, MD; one daughter and son-in-law, Tracy Ann S. Barksdale and husband, Kenneth Wayne 'Bubba' Barksdale of Sutherlin; two sisters, Lucille 'Peggy' S. Clark of South Boston and Mary S. Eastwood of Sutherlin; and six grandchildren. Virginia Hirshburg Brown Virginia Hirshburg Brown, 80, of Luray, Va., formerly of Virgilina, died Saturday in the Whispering Pines Nursing Home in Luray. Funeral services for Mrs. Brown will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Brooks Funeral Home Chapel. Father R. Douglas Geddes will officiate. Burial will follow in the Virgilina Cemetery. Mrs. Brown was born in Richmond on July 23, 1922 to the late Alfred E. Hirshburg and the late Allena Pegram Hirshburg. She was married to the late Julian T. Brown, and was retired from Reynolds Metals in Richmond. Mrs. Brown was a member of St. Timothy Episcopal Church in Clarksville. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Alfred E. Hirshburg. George Carlton Stevens George Carlton Stevens, 77, of 1033 Stevens Road, South Boston, died November 27 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Mr. Stevens was born in Halifax County on March 28, 1925, the son of Alvah Carlton Stevens and Annie Gravitt Stevens and was married to Dena Reaves Stevens. He was a lifelong member of Grace Baptist Church where he was a trustee, a deacon, and a Sunday school teacher for over 50 years. Mr. Stevens was a moderator of the Dan River Baptist Association and also was Mission chairman and oversaw the creation and maintenance of the Disaster Relief trailer. He was a US Navy WWII Veteran having served aboard the USS Intrepid in the Pacific Theater. He was a member of the VFW Post 8243, and was also on the Board of Directors of the Don Bryant Evangelistic Association. Mr. Stevens was a Life Member and Past Master of Faulkner Memorial Lodge #98, AF&AM, was member and Past High Priest of Halifax Royal Arch Chapter #38, was a Life member of Euclid Royal Arch Chapter #7, Danville. He was a recipient of the KYCH (Knight York Cross of Honor). Mr. Stevens was Past District Deputy for the 37th Masonic District and was Past District Deputy Grand High Priest of the 7th Capitular District. He was Past Sovereign Master of the Allied Masonic Degree and was awarded the Knight Cross of Honor. He was a member and past Governor of the Commonwealth York Rite College #50. He holds the Order of the Purple Cross, York Rite Sovereign College of North America. His survivors include his wife of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dwight Carlton Stevens and wife, Ellen, of Chapel Hill, NC, and Mark Edwin stevens and wife, Sarah, of Virgilina; one brother and sister-in-law, Wallace D. Stevens and wife, Barbara, of South Boston; one sister, Leora Stevens Farrar of Richmond; five grandchildren, Alicia S. Roberts and Dena Joy McCready, both of Virgilina, Dale W. Mack Edward Pearson Mack Edward Pearson, 76, of Greensboro, NC, died November 27 in Durham Regional Hospital. A native of Guilford County, NC, Mr. Pearson was born July 24, 1926, to the late William Ernest Pearson and Mary Viola Cain Pearson. Bettie Jean Lovelace Bettie Jean Lovelace, 64, of Newark, NJ, formerly of Halifax County, died November 26 at Beth Israel Hospital in Newark. Ms. Lovelace was born in Halifax County on May 2, 1938, the daughter of the late Tom A. Lovelace and Florence Sydnor Lovelace. She was a member of New Salem Baptist Church of Newark, and a former member of Banister Hill Baptist Church. Survivors include one son, James P. Lovelace of Newark; her mother of Halifax; three sisters, Fannie L. Venable of Arlington, Sarah L. Williams of Irvington, NJ, and Mary L. Clipper of Frederick, MD; two brothers, James Lovelace and Frank Lovelace, both of Halifax. Irene Petty Perkins Mrs. Irene Petty Perkins, 78, of Summit Drive in South Boston, died Sunday, December 1, at The Woodview. She was born on June 12, 1924 to the late William Able Petty and Rosa Smart Petty Davis, and was a member of McCanless Memorial United Methodist Church. Mrs. Perkins is survived by one son, Kenneth Perkins and two sisters, Lila Rumbaugh and Rosa Lee Davis, all of South Boston. John Walter Edmunds Funeral services for Mr. John Walter Edmunds will be held Tuesday, December 3 at 12 noon at the Banister Hill Baptist Church. The Rev. Dr. William Carr will officiate. Mr. Edmunds, of Halifax, died November 27 in South Boston. He was 50. Mr. Edmunds was the son of the late Freeman Edmunds and Mrs. Bernice McCraw Edmunds. He was a member of the Banister Hill Baptist Church. Mr. Edmunds is survived by one daughter, Sharon D. Edmunds of Richmond, one son, Yancey Edmunds of South Carolina, one sister, Deborah Sims of Halifax, eight grandchildren and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends. Virginia Elliott Puryear Funeral services for Virginia Elliott Puryear were held Sunday at the North Fork Baptist Church in Virgilina. The Rev. Bill LaWall officiated. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Mrs. Puryear died Saturday at her home on East Hyco Road in South Boston. She was 83. Mrs. Puryear was born in Halifax County on May 16,1919 to the late Edward T. Elliott and the late Virgie Hudson Elliott. She was married to the late Robert Lee Puryear. Mrs. Puryear was a retired Craddock-Terry employee and was a member of the North Fork Baptist Church, where she served as clerk, Sunday School teacher and was active in the W.M.U. and helped with the Veterans Day programs. She was an active member of Town &Country Senior Citizens, Cherry Hill United Methodist Women, the AARP and a former Good Samaritan volunteer. Mrs. Puryear is survived by two sisters, Lucy E. Chandler and her husband Edward of Virgilina and Elizabeth E. Marshall and her husband Harley of Allisonia Va., several nieces and nephews and faithful caregivers Frances Whitt and Reva Nichols. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Puryear was preceded in death by two brothers, Herbert Elliott and James Elliott and one sister, Margaret Smith. Charlie Franklin Bray Funeral services for Mr. Charlie Franklin Bray of 450 Cresent Drive in South Boston will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Powell Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Mr. Bray was born in Halifax County on September 6, 1943 to the late Versie J. Bray and the late Annie B. Arrington Bray. He was married to Edna Smoot Bray. Mr. Bray is survived by his wife, one daughter, Connie Gail Bray of Oxford, N.C., four sisters, Ina B. New and Irma B. Davis, Glenda B. Henderson, all of South Boston, Brenda B. Wilson of Chase City, and two brothers, Clifton Bray of Richmond and Clarence Bray of Lexington, N.C. He was preceded in death by one son, Robert Franklin Bray. Mary Teresa Howery Mary Teresa Howery of Buffalo Road in Long Island, Va., died November 30, at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was born in Richmond on June 8, 1958 and was the daughter of John David Howery and Mary Tucker Howery. Ms. Howery is survived by one sister, Alanda Gregory of Luray, Va., and two brothers, David howery of Roanoke and Barry Howery of Salem. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Thomas Alexander Walton Thomas Alexander Walton, of L.P. Bailey Highway in Halifax, died Friday November 29 at Halifax Regional Hospital at the age of 75. Mr. Walton was born in Halifax County, Va., on April 2, 1927, and was the son of the late Mr. Howard Walton and Mrs. Georgianna Thaxton Walton. He was married to the late Mrs. Geraldine Walton and was a member of the Dan River View Baptist Church. Mr. Walton was a World War II Army veteran. Mr. Thomas Alexander Walton is survived by one sister, Mrs. Lucy Calander of Lawrenceville, Va.; and by a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Funeral services for Mr. Thomas Alexander Walton will be held Wednesday, December 4, at 11 a.m., with services at the chapel of Jeffress Funeral Home, with the Rev. Samuel Mitchell officiating. December 4, 2002 Willie Green Petty Willie Green 'Bill' Petty, 84, formerly of South Boston, died November 29 in Philadelphia, PA. Mr. Petty was born in Halifax County on February 12, 1918, the son of the late Alexander Petty Sr. and Mary Ann Petty. Survivors include three daughters, Brenda Petty-Newborn of Philadelphia, Renaye Petty Brown and Regina Petty, both of NJ; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; five sisters, Lottie Mae P. Logan of Philadelphia, Helen P. Henry and Harriette Petty, both of South Boston, Martha Ann P. Mansui and Vernall P. Brandon, both of Capitol Heights, MD; and one brother, John Henry Petty of South Boston. He was preceded in death by two sons, Frederick Ballou and Stanley Petty. Virginia Howard Ransone Virginia Howard Ransone, 78, died on November 26, in a rehabilitative facility in Richmond. The daughter of the late Thomas Craddock and Gladys Younge Howard, she was born and lived a number of years in South Boston. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Leo Cromwell Ransone Jr. Mrs. Ransone is survived by her children, Leo C. Ransone III, and Sandy of Abecons, NJ, Joanne R. George Grayson Wagstaff Sr. George Grayson Wagstaff Sr., 75, of 4012 Clover Road, Clover, died December 1 at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was born in Mecklenburg County on April 3, 1927, the son of Hunter Rice Wagstaff and Hattie Clayton Wagstaff, and was married to Olive Clay Wagstaff. Mr. Wagstaff was a member of Fork Baptist Church, a member of the Woodmen of the World, was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 99. He was a Veteran in WWII where he served as a Merchant Marine; in the Korean Conflict he was a Sgt. in the US Army where he was a part of the Battle of Heart Break Ridge. Mr. Wagstaff received several metals for his service in the military. He worked for the Electrux Corp. in Danville for 40 years where he was a sales manager. Survivors include his wife of the home; one son, Dr. George Grayson Wagstaff Jr. and wife, Deborah, of College Park, MD; two sisters, Harriett Gilmer and Mary Wood, both of Chase City; one brother, Norman D. Wagstaff of Skipwith; and a number of nieces and nephews. Pleasant CME Church. Survivors include her husband of the home; four daughters, Catherine Williams, Grady Chandler and Alease Carden, all of Halifax, and Joyce McKinnon of South Boston; three sons, Herbert Williams of Columbus, Ohio, Thomas Rudolph Williams Jr. of Long Island, NY and Bernard Odell Williams of South Boston; 18 grandchildren and one great-grandson. Annie Mae Johnson Wright Annie Mae Johnson Wright, 85, a resident of Alamance Health Care died Monday, December 2, at Alamance Regional Medical Center in NC. Mrs. Wright was a native of Chatham County and the daughter of the late James William Johnson and the late Emma Alice Buckner Johnson. She was a homemaker and member of Piedmont Presbyterian Church where she was also a member of the Blue Circle Sunday School Class. She was employed by Southside Adult Training Center, and was a retired employee of Tultex, Inc. Mrs. Jennings is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Edith Cawthon and Mrs. Harriett Claiborne, both of South Boston, and three sons, Henry E. Jennings Jr., William Jennings and the Rev. Mr. Pulliam was born in Halifax County on July 13, 1917, the son of Hershel Montine Pulliam and Grayce Dunn Pulliam and was married to Shirley Lee Brooks Pulliam. He was a member of First Baptist Church where he was a member of the Lacy Bible Class and the Chancel Choir for 50 years. He was a retired salesman with Smith Automotive. Surviving Mr. Pulliam are two daughters, Terry P. Moore of Augusta and Jerri P. Long of Roxboro, NC; one sister, Rebecca P. Mr. Anderson was born in Halifax County on October 11, 1912, the son of Junious Perlie Anderson and Hallie Clay Anderson and was married to Frances Owen Anderson. He was a member of McKendree United Methodist Church and the Woodmen of the World. Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Katherine A. Mattson and husband, Richard of Prince Frederick, MD; one granddaughter, Courtney Leigh Mattson of Prince Frederick; one grandson, Michael Mattson of Prince Frederick. Isabelle Redd Crump Isabelle Redd Crump, 80, of Clarksville, died December 11 at Meadowview Terrace in Clarksville. Ms. Crump grew up in Mecklenburg County and was employed by Burlington Industries.
