Mrs. Bailey was born in Halifax County on April 14, 1915, the daughter of Squire Buster and Martha Sparrow Buster and was married to the late James Bailey. She was a member of Five Fork Baptist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Bertha Watson of Halifax and Bessie Bailey of the home; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Annias Bailey of South Boston; two sisters-in-law, Katherine Bailey and Ada Bailey, both of Clays Mill. Mr. Burnette was born in South Boston on March 28, 1938, the son of Virginia Talley and Joseph Harrison Burnette of Buffalo Junction. Survivors include his wife, Cherry R. Mrs. Goode was born in Halifax County on September 9, 1926, the daughter of John Willie Davis Sr. and Mary Scott Davis and was married to Ruben H. Goode Jr. She was a member of White Oak Grove Baptist Church and was a retired Halifax County school teacher. She was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy, Altavista, and a homemaker. Melville Lawless Ratliff Sr. Melville Lawless Ratliff Sr., 72, of Burlington, NC died December 31 at Alamance Regional Medical Center. Mr. Ratliff was a native of South Boston, the son of William Walter Ratliff and Zelda Roach Ratliff and was married to Betty Farris Ratliff. He was a graduate of Elon University, retired from AT&T, was a US Marine Veteran, serving in WWII, Korean Conflict and served two tours of duty. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Melba Ratliff Hughes and husband, Walter, of Burlington; one son, Melville Lawless 'Chip' Ratliff Jr., and his companion, Sarah Harpe, of Burlington; three sisters, Melinda Piland and husband, Ben, of Mebane, NC, Mildred Curtis and Stella Crabtree, both of Graham, NC; one brother, William Douglas Ratliff and wife, Doris, of Mayodan, NC; three grandchildren, Michael Carroll, Joshua Carroll, and Jennifer Harpe; and two brother-in-laws, Wheeler Hoyle of Graham and Lou Jarman of CO. Flossie Chappell Younger Flossie Chappell Younger, 96, of Ball Park Loop, Halifax, died December 31 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Mrs. Younger was born in Halifax County on June 3, 1906, the daughter of Lee Chappell and the late Cora Lee Chappell and was married to the late Albert Younger Jr. She was a member of New Zion Baptist Church. January 6, 2003 Cameron Draper Anderson Funeral services for Cameron Draper Anderson, 76, of Nathalie, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church of Republican Grove with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. Rodney Barwick and the Rev. Shelton Miles III will conduct the service. Mr. Anderson died Saturday at Halifax Regional Hospital. He was born in Halifax County on March 31, 1926, a son of Robert Lee Anderson and Bessie Mae Wright Anderson. He was married to Arey Guthrie Anderson. Mr. Anderson was a member of Childrey Baptist Church. He also was a published author and a World War II veteran. He is survived by his wife, Arey G. Anderson of Nathalie, three daughters, Patricia Roberts and husband Carroll of Alton, Angela Laws and husband Daylon of Blythewood, South Carolina, and Teresa Carr and husband Ronnie of Nathalie, and one son, Timothy Anderson of Nathalie. Seven grandchildren and five great- grandchildren survive. Other survivors include one brother, Tom Anderson of Nathalie, four sisters, Violet Lester of Halifax, Glennie Wade of Nathalie, Josie Guill of Scottsburg and Janice Wright of Rustburg, and one special friend, Fuzzy Hines. Thomas Edward Allen Thomas Edward Allen, 74, of Amherst, died January 2 at Virginia Baptist Hospital. Mr. Allen was born in Detroit, MI on July 19, 1928, the son of John Berkley Allen and Telitha Jane Riddle Allen and was married to Lula White Allen. Survivors include one daughter, Telitha A. Mahdavi and husband, Saeed, of Lynchburg; one granddaughter, Shirin Mahdavi of Lynchburg; two brothers, Dennis Allen of Halifax and Eugene Allen of Richmond. Mr. Brooks was born in Halifax County on December 29, 1921 to the late Richard Brooks and the late Fannie Crawley Brooks. He was married to Josephine Crosby Brooks and was a member of the Dan River Bethel Baptist Church. He was a WWII Veteran, where he served in the United States Army. Mr. Brooks is survived by his wife, two sons, Leroy Brooks of Silver Springs Md. and Michael Brooks of Washington, D.C., six grandchildren, one great-grandchild, three sisters, Rosetta Hackley of South Boston, Willye Johnson of Cooksville, Md., and Elizabeth Medley of South Boston, two daughters-in-law, one brother-in- law, three sisters-in-law and a host of other relatives and friends. Frank Melvin Brown Frank Melvin Brown, 71, of Glen Burnie, MD, died at his home. Born in Clover, Mr. Brown attended Halifax Training School in Halifax, and served in the US Army. He retired from St. Johnsbury Trucking Co. and Consolidated Freightways, and was a member of Bethel Grove Baptist Church in Clover. Services were held December 3 at 1 p.m. at Crownsville State Veterans Cemetery. Survivors of Mr. Brown include two brothers, Jesse F. Brown of Glen Burnie and William C. She attended Bethel Baptist Church, while in Halifax County. Survivors include one daughter, Julia Thomas Forrest and her husband, Calvin, of Greensboro; two sons, Leland P. Thomas of McLeansville, NC, and Allen B. Thomas and his wife, Gail, of Aiken, SC; grandsons, Gregory A. He was a member of the Tree of Life Pentecostal Holiness Church, was a retired employee of Limitorque and was a US Army Veteran having served a tour of duty in Germany. He was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Scearce died Thursday, January 23, following an automobile accident in Halifax County. He was born August 22, 1935 in Pittsylvania County, a son of the late Sidney Jackson Scearce and the late Lelia Parrish Scearce. Charlie Madison Suttenfield Charlie Madison Suttenfield, M.D., 76, of Lynchburg, Virginia, died January 1 following a long battle with cancer. Dr. Suttenfield was born September 6, 1926 in Lynchburg to the late Rev. Dr. John Lee Suttenfield and Hazel Richardson Suttenfield. He is a graduate of the University of Richmond and the Medical College of Virginia. He was acknowledged for implementing advanced surgical techniques in the Lynchburg area such as corneal transplants, intraocular lens implants, and radial keratotomy (RK). In addition, he was recognized for his work in helping to establish Emergency Medicine departments at Petersburg General Hospital, Johnston-Willis Hospital and Chippenham Hospital. During 1982, he gave service as an ophthalmic medical missionary overseas in Haiti and Nigeria. He also served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1944-1946. He has coached football and basketball at Halifax County High School, Fork Union Military Academy and Hargrave Military Academy. During 1953-1955, he held the position of third baseman for the semi-professional baseball team, South Boston Wrappers. His survivors include his wife, Elsie Jean Paige; four children: Charles Wayne Suttenfield, Suzanne S. Freeman, Sally Suttenfield and Kelley Suttenfield; a grandson: Jesse Lee Freeman and a brother: James Emerson Suttenfield. Another brother, Reverend Dr. John L. Suttenfield II, and an infant sister preceded him in death. Survivors include one daughter, Yolander Carr of South Boston; one son, Kevin Gosier of South Boston; her mother; two grandchildren, Jeremy Gosier and Jacquetta Gosier; two sisters, June Claiborne of South Boston and Regina Johnson of Denver, CO; one brother, John Claiborne Sr. of South Boston; and one daughter-in-law, Ollie Gosier of South Boston. Funeral services for Mrs. Gosier will be held Sunday, February 2 at 2 p.m. at Berry Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Tommy F. Crews Sr. officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home. Julia Hughes Satterfield Julia Hughes Satterfield, 71, of 200 Hamilton Blvd., South Boston, died January 28 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Mrs. Satterfield was born in Halifax County on March 20, 1931, the daughter of the late Charlie Gaston Hughes and Elsie Watts Hughes, and was married to the late Paul I. Satterfield. Survivors include two daughters, Brenda D. Beachy of Clover and Rose Curry of South Boston; one son, Danny I. Satterfield of South Boston; two sisters, Ruth H. Roark of Richmond and Ruby L. Yancey of Halifax; three grandsons, S. Paul Kipps, Richard and Jason Beachy; three step-grandchildren, Lynn and Jody Beachy, and Suzanne Waltrip; six step-great-grandchildren, Cierra Renee Kipps, Brandon, Brooke and Trenton Beachy, and Tyler and Wade Waltrip. She was also preceded in death by one grandchild, James Allen Beachy. A memorial service for Mrs. Satterfield will be held at Mt. Laurel United Methodist Church today, January 31 at 11:30 a.m. with the Rev. Vance Midget officiating. Alvin Odell Strickland Alvin Odell Strickland, 82, of Java died January 29 in Autumn Care of Altavista. Mr. Strickland was born May 8, 1920, in Halifax County, the son of Arthur Strickland and Lillian Crews Strickland, and was married to the late Susie McGregor Strickland. He was a retired employee of Pannill Knitting. Survivors include one son, Alvin Hubert Strickland of Java; two daughters, Betty George and Linda Wilmoth, both of Java; two brothers, Lee Strickland of Alamogordo, NM and Thomas Strickland of Cluster Springs; five sisters, Linwood Guthrie and Spotswood Davis, both of Nathalie, Elizabeth Saunders of Halifax, Jean Oakes of Turbeville, and Alice Strickland of Oklahoma City, OK; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Edward Strickland. Funeral services for Mr. Strickland will be held today, January 31 at 11 a.m. at Colbert-Moran Funeral Home Chapel in Gretna with the Rev. Shelton Miles officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Burial Park.
