Funeral services for Mr. Arthur will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Williams Funeral Home, Lawrenceville, with interment at Oakwood Cemetery. Mr. Arthur was preceded in death by his parents, Frank Marion and Patti Hupp Arthur, and his beloved stepmother, Ruth Thayer Arthur. He is survived by his wife, Nancy Baynes Arthur, a son, Frank M. Arthur and wife Stacy, a daughter, April A. Roberts and husband Ernie, and three grandchildren, Amanda and Ashley Roberts and Dalton Arthur, all of Lawrenceville. Other survivors include two sisters, Frances Martin of Smithfield and Mattie Johnson of Suffolk, two brothers, Thomas Arthur and wife Betty and Chester Arthur of South Boston. Mr. Arthur retired from Felton Bros. Transit Mix, Inc. in June 1996. He was an active member of the Brunswick Volunteer Rescue Squad for 30 years and a member of the Lawrenceville Lions Club for 25 years. He also served in the U.S. Coast Guard. Box 2, Lawrenceville, Va. 23868. Ophelia Owen Cheek Mrs. Ophelia Owen Cheek of Philpott Road died Friday at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was 65 years old. Funeral services for Mrs. Cheek will be held Monday, February 3, at 2 p.m. at the Dan River View Baptist Church, with burial in the church cemetery. The Rev. Clifton Madden will officiate. Mrs. Cheek was born in Halifax County on July 12, 1937, and was married to Jasper Cheek. She was a member of the Dan River View Baptist Church and a former employee of Burlington Industries. Mrs. Cheek is survived by her husband, Jasper Cheek, three sons, the Rev. Jasper K. Cheek and Deacon Chris Cheek of South Boston and Deacon Sherman Cheek of Roxboro, N.C., eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Other survivors include one sister, Mrs. Nannie Bailey of South Boston, three daughters-in-law, Mrs. Darva D. Cheek and Mrs. Jennifer P. Cheek of South Boston and Mrs. Sonya F. Vert Dallas Jr. Mr. Lee Vert Dallas Jr. of Hunting Creek Road, Nathalie, died Sunday at the home. Mr. Dallas was 92 years old. He was born in Halifax County on January 5, 1910, a son of Lee Vert Dallas Sr. and Nola Nichols Dallas. Funeral arrangements were incomplete at press time. Angie D. Palmer Long Angie D. Palmer Long, 78, of 1023 Newton Farm Road, South Boston, died January 31 at Twin Oaks Convalescent Home. Mrs. Long was born in Rowan County, NC on June 25, 1924, the daughter of the late Linwood Johnson Dease and Maggie Mae Hunsucker Dease. She was first married to Bernard Lee Palmer and then to Johnie Matt Long, both deceased. She was retired from Tultex. Mrs. Pulley was born in Altavista on October 28, 1933, the daughter of the late Clara and Claude Pugh. She was married to Marvin Eugene Pulley. Eddie Howard Stephens Eddie Howard Stephens, 56, of Washington, DC, died January 27. Mr. Stephens was born in Halifax County on November 26, 1946, the son of Lucy P. Mr. Barker was born in Halifax County on April 28, 1928, the son of the late Claude Lee Barker and Mary Lizzie Brown Barker and was married to Hazel L. Barker. He was a member of Bethel Hill Baptist Church in Person County, NC, was an Army Veteran and retired from Georgia Pacific. Matze Sr., 78, of 517 Greenway Drive, South Boston, died February 3 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Born in Wallace, NC on April 20, 1924, he was the son of William M. Matze and Blanch Linn Matze, and was married to Florence Gravitt Matze. Mr. Matze was a member of First Presbyterian Church of South Boston. As a Veteran of WWII, he served in the US Marine Corps, was a member of the Masonic Fraternity Halifax Lodge No. 96, a member of American Legion Post 8, was an active volunteer in the Halifax County Rescue Squad, serving as Captain in 1968-1969, and was awarded Life Member status. Survivors include his wife; one son, Douglas B. Matze Jr. of Chesterfield; one daughter, Mary Lou Taylor of South Boston; three brothers, Kenneth Matze of Richmond, Luther Matze of Suffolk, and William J. Dr. Fensterer was born in Oyster Bay, NY on November 22, 1923, the son of Philip Hubert Fensterer Sr. and Laurietta Brice Fensterer, and was married to Christine Chaney Fensterer. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church, and the AMA. He practiced family medicine in Glen Cove, NY and Glen Head, NY, and emergency medicine in South Boston. Survivors include his wife of the home; five daughters, Anna Marie Fensterer Seale of Frederick, MD, Carol F. Pattarini and Dr. Dorothy Fensterer-Newton, both of Halifax, Sara F. Price of East Point, GA, and Susan F. Eunice M. Wood Eunice M. Wood, 94, of The Woodview, died February 1 in South Boston. Born in Patrick County on January 30, 1909, she was the daughter of the late John Edger Moore and Lula Fulcher Moore, and was married to the late James Edger Wood. Mrs. Wood was a retired school teacher, and was a member of Patrick Springs Providence Methodist Church. Survivors include a daughter-in-law, Vera Williams Wood; two grandchildren, Kathy Wood and Sandra Lowery, all of South Boston; and two great-grandchildren, Lydia and Dylan Lowery. February 10, 2003 Virginia Sue Kefauver Caskie Virginia Sue Kefauver Caskie, of Halifax, died Saturday at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was 72 years of age at the time of her death. Virginia Sue Kefauver Caskie was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, on February 18, 1930, and was the daughter of Floyd Scott Kefauver and Rachel Brown Kefauver. She was married to Walter Allison Caskie Jr. Virginia Sue Kefauver Caskie is survived by her husband, Walter Allison Caskie Jr., of Halifax; one daughter and son-in-law, Allison and Lee Kingston of Cincinnati, Ohio; one son and daughter-in-law, Stephen Scott Caskie and Sudie Back of Branford, Connecticut; and one brother, Scott Kefauver of Nashville, Tennessee. Burial will follow at the Peninsula Memorial Park. Mrs. Dutrow died Sunday, February 9. She was 84. Mrs. Dutrow was born in South Boston on August 13, 1918 to the late Richard Owen and the late Sarah Wade Owen. She graduated from C.H. Friend High School and Longwood College, where she earned a degree in elementary education. Mrs. Dutrow was a member of the Main Street United Methodist Church in South Boston, where she was married to David Dutrow. She was a teacher in the Newport News Public School system. Mrs. Dutrow was currently a member of Wythe Presbyterian Church in Hampton. She was a beloved wife and mother, and was active in the Girl and Boy Scouts and PTA, and was an official in AAU Swimming. Mrs. Dutrow is survived by her husband of 59 years, one son, Dr. David A. Dutrow III of Derwood, Md., her daughters, Mary and her husband Frank Emerson of Baltimore and Virginia and husband David Allsopp of Germantown, Md., four grandchildren, David, Matthew, Robert and Elizabeth Allsopp, two sisters, Sarah Wade Owen of South Boston, Bertha Jane and Jack Dunavant of Halifax, and a brother, Richard Owen and his wife Anne of Roswell, Ga. Nunn Construction Company. He was a member of Aarons Creek Baptist Church and attended McGhee's Mill Baptist Church. February 28, 2003 Nat Daniel Anderson Nat Daniel Anderson, 70, of Halifax, died February 22 in Berry Hill Nursing Home. Born May 17, 1932, in Halifax County, he was the son of the late Doc Nat Anderson and the late Florine Coles Anderson and was married to Sallie Pat Jones Anderson, who preceded him in death. Survivors of Mr. Anderson include two daughters, Karen A. Traynham and husband, Douglas, of Greensboro, NC, and Michelle Anderson of Galax; six sons, Randy C. Anderson and wife, Christine, of Blairs, Daniel C. Anderson and wife, Nadine, and Ray C. Anderson and wife, Jennifer, all of Galax, Lander G. Anderson and wife, Margaret, and Duncan D. Anderson, all of Halifax, and Jerome Anderson of NC; 23 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; his mother-in-law, A.J. Jones; one brother, Dallas S. Anderson and wife, Carrie, of East Orange, NJ; one sister, Glossie O. Anderson and husband, Lorenza, of Edison, NJ; and one sister-in-law, Mary Anderson. A funeral service for Mr. Anderson will be held today, February 28, at 2 p.m. at New Zion Baptist Church with the Rev. Willie N. Yancey officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Eva Hamlett Crews Eva Hamlett Crews, 82, of 8101 Clarkton Road, Nathalie, died February 24 at her home. Mrs. Crews was born in Charlotte County on June 5, 1920, the daughter of Luther Hamlett and Annie Trent Hamlett and was married to Roger Greenwood Crews. She was a member of Staunton River Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband of the home; one son, Elbert Crews and wife, Evelyn, of South Boston; one daughter, Vivian C. Sweeting and husband, Seth, of Nathalie; one grandson, Bill Crews and wife, Tricia, of Nathalie; six sisters, Rosa Cook and Esther Martin, both of Crystal Hill, Eunice Hux of South Boston, Beatrice Jones of Nathalie, Mary Hudson of Clover, Alice Lowery of Bay City, Texas and Daisy Meurrens of Norfolk. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Cabel and James Hamlett; and three sisters, Nellie Jennings, Georgia Beadles and Velma Glass. Blanche Walker Harris Blanche Walker Harris, 91, of 1107 Handy Bottom Trail, Nathalie, died February 25 at Halifax Regional Hospital. She was born in Halifax County on April 26, 1911, the daughter of Emmitt Walker and Mamie Elder Walker and was married first to Sonny Mason, then to William Dallas Harris. Mrs. Harris was a member of Falling River Baptist Church. Survivors include two sons, William T. Harris and wife, Eleanor, and James A. Harris, all of Nathalie; one daughter, Mamie H. Seamster and husband, Raleigh, also of Nathalie eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two great- great-grandchildren. Mattie Pryor Lovelace Mattie Pryor Lovelace, 61, of Atlantic City, NJ, formerly of South Boston, died February 24 at Atlantic City Medical center. She was born in Halifax County on August 17, 1941, the daughter of Thomas Lovelace and Frances Robertson Lovelace. She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church. Survivors of Mrs. Lovelace include one son, Brian Lovelace of Halifax; one daughter-in-law, Lynette E. Lovelace of Halifax; two grandchildren, Latrease Lovelace and L. Brianna Lovelace, both of Halifax; two sisters, Beulah Ford and Sarah Fountain, both of South Boston; five brothers, Gary Lovelace of Absecon, NJ, Dwight Lovelace of CA, Carroll Lovelace of Gaithersburg, MD, Gerald Lovelace of Atlantic City, and James Lovelace of Philadelphia, PA. Rosa Edna Boyd Street Rosa Edna Boyd Street, 67, of Chesapeake, formerly of Halifax County, died February 24 in Chesapeake. Mrs. Street was born in Halifax County on July 1, 1935, the daughter of Isaiah Boyd and Nannie Williams Boyd and was married to Joseph B. Street. She was a former member of First Baptist Church of News Ferry. Survivors include her husband; four sons, Joseph B. Street Jr., Charles Street and Kean Street, all of Chesapeake, and Donald Street of Texas; one daughter, Shryle Harris of Norfolk; several grandchildren; one brother, Ishmael Boyd of News Ferry; and one sister, Betty Medley of Washington, DC. Funeral services for Mrs. Street will be held tomorrow, March 1 at noon at Dome of Canaan Baptist Church in Chesapeake. Burial will follow in Chesapeake. The family will receive friends immediately following the services. Dan H. Veasey Dan H. Veasey, 90, of Roanoke, formerly of Halifax County, died February 21. He was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII and was commanding officer of the 2174th Army Reserve Area Service Unit. He was a 1935 graduate of V.M.I., was a member of Lakeland Lodge #190 A.F. & A.M. and the Appendant Shrine Bodies. Mr. Veasey was a retired Civil Engineer with Appalachian Power Company. He was a life member of the Roanoke Life Saving Crew, was active in many civic and humanitarian organizations, and was a member of Raleigh Court United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his wives, Eleanor Epperly Veasey and Virginia Martin Cook Veasey. Survivors are his sons, William M. Veasey and wife, Ruth York Veasey, of Brevard, NC, and Steve Veasey; and a sister-in-law, Rosetta Veasey, of South Boston. Funeral services for Mr. Veasey were held in Roanoke. Wert Lee White Wert Lee White, 82, of 7101 Clays Mill Road, Scottsburg, died February 25 at his home. Mr. White was born in Halifax County on April 14, 1920, the son of William Hampton White and Hattie Guill White and was married to Frances Cliborne White. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church where he was a former deacon and a member of the choir for many years. He was also a member of the French Masonic Lodge #270. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Jenny Lee and Lee Walters of Richmond; one son and daughter-in-law, Ronnie Dean and Jo Ann G. White of Scottsburg; two sisters, Miriam Burton of Clays Mill and Catherine Womack of Halifax; three brothers, Will White of Scottsburg, Jerry White and Dave White, both of Newport News; two grandchildren, Karen West and Scott Walters, both of Richmond; and two great-grandchildren. Mr. Williams was born in Granville County, NC on May 27, 1926, the son of Jesse James Williams and Della White Williams, and was married to Mary Sue Bowen Williams. He was a member of Ash Avenue Baptist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Deborah Ann Lloyd of Chesterfield and Sandra Y. Ingram of South Boston; one son, Michael R. Williams of Troy, IL; three brothers, James, Floyd and Carlton Williams, all of Lakeland, FL; three granddaughters; one grandson; and eight great-grandchildren.
