Mr. Puryear was born in Halifax County on November 19, 1919, the son of Frank Puryear and Bessie Sue Loftis Puryear and was married to Winsome Baker Puryear. He was a member of Black Walnut Baptist Church and the Adult Men's #1 Sunday School Class. Mr. Puryear was a retired truck driver with R.O. Harrell Inc. and was a Navy Veteran. Survivors include two sons, Kenneth J. Puryear of South Boston and Dennis R. Puryear and his wife, Janice, of Scottsburg; one daughter, Pamela P. Ashley of Roxboro, NC; two brothers, Frank Puryear of Clinton, NC and Richard Puryear of Durham, NC; three grandsons, Phillip D. Throckmorton, Matthew S. Puryear and Jarrid M. Puryear; one granddaughter, Kistla M. Wheeler; two step-grandchildren, Johnny M. Williams Jr. and David W. Williams; and three great-grandchildren. Mr. Anderson was born in Halifax County on July 26, 1921, the son of Howard Putnam Anderson and Elizabeth Palmer Anderson and was married to Alice Grey Tharp Anderson. He was a member of First Baptist Church and Kerns Masonic Lodge at Crystal Hill. He was a retired Commissioner of Revenue for Halifax County. Survivors include his wife; two sons, John Logan Anderson of Lynchburg and Thomas Putnam Anderson of Crystal Hill and his fiance', Sharon Hill, of Nathalie; three nephews, Howard P. Ms. Holder was born in Halifax County on September 6, 1909, the daughter of Junious Dunn and Ellie Dunn. She was a member of Bereen Baptist Church in Fayetteville. Survivors include one son, Cornelious Melvin Holder III of Fayetteville; two grandchildren, Barry Holder and Crystal Holder, both of Fayetteville; two great- grandchildren; one sister, Marion Burton of South Boston; and one daughter-in- law, Viola Holder. Mr. Rice was born in Halifax County on September 9, 1921, the son of Emma Florine Tuck Rice and Johnnie Booker Rice and was first married to Louise Morris Rice, and later to the late Melvina Agnew Rice. He was a member of Union United Church of Christ, a former member of American Legion Post 337, Woodman of the World and the Virgilina Ruritan Club. He was a retired HVAC supervisor with ABB, and was an Army Veteran. Funeral services for Mr. Rice will be held at Union United Church of Christ tomorrow, April 5, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Richard Spencer Trent, Jr. Richard Spencer Trent Jr., 64, formerly of Halifax, died March 30 at Durham Regional Hospital. Mr. Trent was born in Halifax County on April 22, 1938, the son of Richard Spencer Trent Sr. and Faustina Mae Trent, and was married to Tules M. Trent. He was a member of New Vernon baptist Church and was a Vietnam Air Force Veteran. Survivors include his wife; his mother; three sons, Charles Edward Miller of Washington, DC, Richard Spencer Trent III of Richmond, and Dorsey Eugene Trent of Halifax; three daughters, Deborah R. Petty of Alexandria, Diana Lynn Womack of Halifax, and Dietra Yvette Trent of Richmond; three sisters, Anna Pearl Trent of New York, Roma Mae Trent and Deborah Michelle Hester, both of Halifax; 10 grand children; and five great-grandchildren. Mrs. Cole was born in Halifax County on July 16, 1940, the daughter of Charlie Wiley Conner and Mina Fallen Conner, and was married to John Oldham Cole. She was a member of First Baptist Church of South Boston, and Halifax Garden Club. Survivors include one daughter, Sheri Cole Smith of Garland, NC; one grandchild, Chandler O. Smith of Garland; and one brother, Willy N. Conner of Halifax. Services for Mrs. Cole were held April 6 at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church of South Boston with the Rev. Ralph Harrell officiating. James Russell Dillon A graveside service will be held for James "Jim" Russell Dillon at Roselawn Burial Park at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Martinsville. The Rev. Marvin Wade will conduct the service. Mr. Dillon, 65, died Saturday at his home on Farm Road in South Boston. A Henry County native, Mr. Dillon was born July 22, 1937, a son of the late John Russell Dillon and late Maggie Mae Young Dillon. Mr. Dillon retired with 22 years service in supervision from the Department of Corrections in Virginia. He was a member of Pocahontas Baptist Church in Bassett. Mr. Dillon was a member of the American Watchmakers Institute, and a past scoutmaster for Troop 417 in Halifax. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Katie Yale Dillon, of the home, and two sons, Mark Edwin Dillon and Oran Bernard Dillon, both of Richmond. Also surviving are one brother, Andrew Jackson Dillon of Bassett, and two sisters, Carol Dillon Doyer of Eden, N.C., and Ruby Dillon Brooks of Fort Washington, Maryland. He was preceded in death by one sister, Delilah Ellen Dillon. Mr. LeFontaine was born in Buffalo, NY on April 6, 1927, the son of Joseph Romeo LaFontaine and Charlotte LaFontaine, and was married to Rosalie Wooding Weatherford LeFontaine. He was an Army Veteran of WWII, was a writer and had nine books published. Mr. LeFontaine was a member of the Authors Guild and American Mensa. Following military service, he held various positions as an engineer in both the U.S. and the Orient. In later years, he moved to Virginia and served as a professor at Southside Virginia Community College. 'Tug' Scott, 88, of Philadelphia, PA, formerly of Nathalie, died April 22, in Philadelphia. Mr. Scott is survived by two daughters, Thalier Nash and Verona Norfleet, both of Philadelphia; and one son, Marshall Scott. Services for Mr. Whitlow were held April 19. He was born in Clover on July 18, 1924, the son of John Richard Whitlow and Anita Dunkley Whitlow, and was married to Doris V. Whitlow. Mr. Whitlow was a Navy Veteran of WWII, VFW, American Legion, and a member of the Kempsville Baptist Church and Lion's Club where he was a Melvin Jones recipient. April 28, 2003 Paul Lewis Seamster Funeral services for Mr. Paul Lewis Seamster were held yesterday at the First Baptist Church of Republican Grove. The Revs. Shelton Miles and Dr. Elwood Seamster officiated. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Mr. Seamster, of Cousin Lane in Nathalie, died Friday at the home. He was 52. Mr. Seamster was born in Halifax County on March 27, 1951, to the late Henry Lee Seamster and Virginia Pierce Seamster. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Republican Grove. Mr. Seamster is survived by his mother, one brother, Dr. Elwood Seamster and sister-in-law Diane Epps Seamster of Clover, S.C. Wade will be held today (Monday) at the Bermuda Pentecostal Holiness Church, 101 West Hundred, Chester, Va., beginning at 1 p.m. Mr. Wade, a resident of Chester, died April 25, 2003, in a Richmond hospital. He was a retired millwright. Born in Halifax County, he was the son of Emitt Wade and Verna Lloyd Scott and was 74 at the time of his death. Mr. Wade is survived by his wife, Ophelia Wade; sons Bill and Mike Wade; daughter Janet Wilson; sister, Sarah Leber; brother Johnny (Walter) Scott; and other family members. William 'Billy' Chester Wagstaff Mr. William "Billy" Chester Wagstaff of 3244 Bethel Road, Halifax, died April 26, 2003, at Halifax Regional Hospital. Born in Halifax County on December 29, 1931, he was 71 years old at the time of his death. Mr. Wagstaff was the son of Mr. Robert Wilkie Wagstaff, Sr. and Mrs. Mildred A. Newton Wagstaff and was married to Irma Jones Wagstaff. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife and two sisters, Lucille W. Martin and Pauline Throckmorton of Scottsburg; two brothers, Robert Wilkie Wagstaff of Halifax and Earl L. Wagstaff of Scottsburg; and a number of nieces and nephews. April 30, 2003 Marie Howerton Estes Marie Howerton Estes, 75, of 2201 Parker Avenue, South Boston, died April 28 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Mrs. Estes was born in Halifax County on April 25, 1928, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Willie Howerton. She was married to Archer Estes and was a retired employee of Berry Hill Nursing Home and Halifax Cotton Mill. The family will receive friends this evening, April 30, from 7:00 until 8:30, at Brooks Funeral Home, and other times at the home. Hazel Clark Lovelace Hazel Clark Lovelace, 91, of 1098 Love Shop Road, Halifax, died April 27 at Halifax Regional Hospital. Mrs. Lovelace was born in Halifax County on September 19, 1911, the daughter of A.B. Clark and Flossie Blanche Clark and was married to John Allen Lovelace. She was a member of Dan River Baptist Church where she was a member of Women on Mission. Survivors include one son, Gerald Victor Lovelace and wife, Linda, of Halifax; one daughter-in-law, Carol Owen Lovelace, of South Boston; two grandchildren, Marcia Lovelace Crowder of Halifax and Sara Lovelace Jones of Rustburg; one great-grandchild, Ellen Crowder of Halifax; one sister, Lois Clark of Halifax; three brothers, Earl Clark and Harry Clark, both of Halifax, and Berkley Clark of Fallbrook, CA. Survivors of Mrs. O'Geary include three daughters, Katherine Morris, Donna Seate and Linda Coghill, all of Virgilina; her sister, Gay Whitt of Baskerville; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a special nephew, Thomas Puryear; and two special friends, Bet Loftis and Mary Alice Murray. She was preceded in death by her husband, James R. O'Geary.
