Thomas William Wood of Halifax County died June 20, 1864 of wounds he received in battle. Pvt. Wood was a volunteer and signed into the 34th Regiment Virginia Infantry Co. F 3-1-1864. Tom was only seventeen and needed his parents consent. On the 17th of June he was wounded at Petersburg. His body was shipped back home and buried on the family farm on the Rogers Chapel Road near Rogers Chapel Baptist Church.
