Will of Elisha Cox, 1820 - Halifax Co. VA


IN THE NAME OF GOD I Elisha Cox Sr. of the County of Halifax and State of Virgina being of 
Sound mind and understanding and Considering the uncertainty of human life do make This my last 
Will and Testament (to wit) I lend to my wife Elizabeth all my estate both real and personal 
(except So much as may be necfsary to the payment of my Just Debts) during the Term of her 
natural life and at her death to be Desposed of In the following manner Item I Give to my 
Daughters Sally, Patsey, and Judith and To my Son Elisha One Bed and furniture each to them and 
their heirs forever Item I Give to my Daughters Sally and Patsey The Tract of land lying upon 
the waters of Childsey Creek to be equally divided between them The Division to be made by three 
Judicious men, One of whom shall be chosen by my Daughters and the third by my executor, 
hereafter to be named Item I lend to my Son Elisha, the Tract of land whereon I live, and 
Should he have a lawful heir or heirs of his body, at his death I give it to the Said heirs 
aforesaid. But Should he never have an heir ___ and in that case, at his death, the land to be 
equally divided between my Daughters, Sally, Peggy, Patsey & Judith--- I hereby direct the sale 
of all my estate, not heretofore disposed of by my executor, hereafter to be named, and the 
forever to be kept by him On Interest, and paid Over at his discretion to my Daughters Judith & 
Peggy – Francis & William Cox having Received their portion of my estate---There is no 
provision made in this will for them ~ I hereby nominate Constitute and appoint my friend 
Robert Hurt Sole Executor of this my last will and Testament hereby Revoking all others ~ In 
Testimony where of I have hereunto Set my hand & Seal this 25th day of February in the year of 
our lord One Thousand Nine (number eight written above) hundred & Twenty
