Wills: Halifax County, VA In the name of God, Amen, the twelfth (sic) day of January 1781--------I Joshua Powell, being in perfect helth (sic) mind and memory Thanks be given unto God therefore caulling (sic) unto mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die do make and ordane (sic) this my Last Will and Testament that is to say principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul tnto the hands of Almighty God that give it and my body I recommend to the Earth Nothing Doubting but at the general resurrection I shall receive the same again by the Mighty power of God and touching such worldly estate as it wherewith it has pleased God to bless me in this Life. I give devise and dispose in following manner and form First I give and bequeath to Sarah Farmer my daughter one Negro Girl named Pat one bay mare that goes by the name of the young mair (sic) and one hundred acres of land where on she now lives. Also I give to my son Hezekiah Powell Three hundred acers (sic) of land lying from the upper end of my Land on Sandy Creak (sic) also one Negro Girl named Winney, also one Negro Boy named Ned and one mare (?) Polrow(?)-----Also I give to my son James Powell three hundred acres of land whereon I now live also two Negars (sic) Ben and Little Sarah also Fannis colt. Also I give to my son Thomas Anderson Powell three hundred acers (sic) of Land and two Negros, Luck and Armsted and potrow colt. Also I give to my daughter Lucretia Powell two Negros Anack and Tamor and the young mairs (sic) colt. Also I give to my daugter (sic) Nancy two Negros Bett and Stephen ---I give to my daughter Betsy Powell two thousand pounds---I give to my daughter Polly Powell two Negros Hannah and Bob --- Also I give to my wife Mary Powell two Negros Phill and Sarah. This to be my last will and Testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the day and year above written. Joshua Powell, L. S. Witnesses: Joshua Adams, Sam'll Tindall, John (his + mark) Adams, Benja. Donnelly. At a court held for Halifax County the fifth day of May 1781. The last will and testament of Joshua Powell was exhibited in Court and proved by the oaths of three of the subscribing witnesses and ordered to be recorded. And on the motion of Mary Powell, widow and relict of said Joshua who made oath according to law Certificate is granted her for obtaining letters of administration with this will annexed of the estate of the said Joshua Powell and thereupon with Benjamin Dickson, John Adams and Joshua Adams as her sureties entered into and acknowledged bond for the same according to law.
