Will of Edward Powell, 1804 - Halifax Co. VA Copy of the Last Will And Testament of Edward Powell--Dated Feb. 25,1804, Halifax County Virginia::::: In the name of God, Amen. I EDWARD POWELL of Halifax County, Virginia being in perfect health and memory, yet call to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die do make, constitute and ordain, this my last will and testament in manner and form following: Vis. Item, I give and bequeath to my daughter ELIZABETH HODGES, two Negro boys, to wit Charles and Lewis. Item, I give to my daughter RACHEL HEMPERLY the two negroes which she has for sometime had in her possession and which her husband has sold to wit, Tom and Viney. Item, I give and bequeath to my son WILLIAM POWELL two negroes which he now has in his possession, to wit David and Leson. Item, I give and bequeath to my daughter CATHY BOMAR the negro girl, which she now has in her possession named Sarah, together with one other which shall be appraised and supposed to be of sufficient value to make her equal with ELIZABETH HODGES. Item, I give and bequeath to my daughter BARBARA BOMAR one Negro Boy which she now has in her possession, named Robin , together with one other which shall be appraised and supposed to be of equal value to make her equal with ELIZABETH HODGES. Item, I give and bequeath to my son STEPHEN POWELL two negroes which shall be appraised and be of equal value with either of the other childrens portions, together with one bay filley which he now has in his possession and called by the name of Bet, and one feather bed, also a saddle and bridle to be seized out of my estate. All the remaining part of my negroes to be hired and the money arising from the hire to be applied to the support of my son STEPHEN POWELL (or so much thereof as may be necessary ) till he arrives to the age of twenty one years. --then all the remainder of my whole estate to be equally divided between my six afore mentioned children. Lastly, I appoint my son WILLIAM POWELL and brother CHARLES POWELL, executors to this my last will and Testament. In witness whereof I hereunto set my hand and affirmed my seal, this twenty fifth day of February in the year of our Lord, one thousand eight hundred and four.
