Armistead: 1936 Aug. 18 Research made by Arthur R. Thompson Cemetery Location: In a small burial ground on what is known as the Highland Poultry Farm; located only a short distance to the right of Black River Road about 3 miles northwest from the City of Hampton, Virginia. Hampton, Virginia DATE: 1848, date of death. OWNERS: Highland Poultry Farm. DESCRIPTION: Among the interesting tombstones in the old cemeteries of Elizabeth City County, Virginia, is one found in a small burial ground on what is known as the Highland Poultry Farm; the tombstone of Westwood S. Armistead. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: No burials have been made there for a number of years; only about half a dozen small monuments and tombstones are to be seen there today. The most interesting among these, is a tombstone marking the last resting place of a man who for many years occupied a prominent place in Elizabeth City County. The inscription thereon, reads as follows: Sacred to the memory of Westwood S. Armistead who for nearly 40 years was Clerk of the Courts for the County Born June 23rd, 1790 Died January 25th, 1848 Also of his grandchild Mary Susan daughter of James and Nancy Coullino Aged 2 years and 14 days SOURCES OF INFORMATION: Informant: Mr. Thomas Jones, adjoining property.
