Jacobs Cemetery Location: Hampton National Cemetery in which this tombstone is located, is on Route #60 from Hampton, Virginia, one block after entering Phoebus, Virginia town limits on east side of Old Point Road; this is the street that you go into Phoebus on. This grave is about one hundred feet from the main gate on the west. Hampton, Virginia DATE: April 20, 1863. OWNERS: It is a National Cemetery. DESCRIPTION: This stone is a white marble slab fifty-five inches long and one hundred forty- two inches wide and lays out flat on the ground. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The inscription on the stone is as follows: In Memory of Mary Galt and daughter of Lieutenant Thomas G. & Louise E. Baylor Born April 20th 1863 Died June 7th, 1863 The cemetery superintendent says this person is from the same family of Galts whose children cut their names in the engineer’s office built at Fort Monroe, in 1819. This family of Galts lived at the fort in 1845, and this is probably a grandchild. The records in the National Cemetery at Hampton, Virginia, show that this child died at Fort Monroe.
