Jacobs Cemetery Location: From Hampton, Virginia, you take the road leading to Langley Field, Virginia, and as you enter the entrance of the Post to the east about a block, is this cemetery. Hampton, Virginia DATE: 1796, date of oldest inscription. OWNERS: Owned by the Government. DESCRIPTION: This cemetery is enclosed with a brick wall and the graves are well kept. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This property was formerly called the Sherwood Farm, and was owned by the Bookers until the Government bought it. It is said that this was the original burying ground of the Booker family of Hampton, Virginia, and they owned this entire Government Reservation, with an exception of a small amount owned by the Hudgins. The following inscriptions are from stones now standing. In memory of Elizabeth M. Armistead Wife of Moss Armistead of Norfolk Who departed this life Nov. 23, 1803 Aged 23 years The stone at the foot has E.M.A. 1803. This stone is concrete. Sacred to the memory of William Albert Horsaley of Staten Island State of New York who died Nov. 1st, 1834 Aged 22 Years 10 months and 10 days. The stone at the foot has W.A.H. This stone is beautiful white marble. There is a small gray stone not more than a foot wide, a half foot thick and about eight inches high, very rough; in other words, it looks like a rock with the initials “J.B.”. Here lieth Ann Hollier the Daughter of Simon and Ann Hollier She died the 16th day of March, 1796 Aged 12 years She sleeps nor can the lovely angel hear The mourning voice of Friends however dear The pangs of keeneft Woe their foll’n heart may rend Alas: her disembodied Soul cannot attend. (This is a flat white marble stone lying on the ground.) Here Lieth Frances Hollier the Daughter of Simon and Ann Hollier She died the 4th Day of Janry 1798 Aged 16 years Her Soul is fled and gone to Raft from this World of Grief and sin among the good and Righteous forever to remain. Stop: reader Stop: let nature claim a Tear A Mothers laft and only Child lies here. (This is also a white marble stone and lies flat on the ground.)
