HAMPTON, VA - CEMETERIES – Vaughan Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, The Vaughn cemetery: 1937 Mar. 12 Research made by Mrs. Eleanor Jacobs Cemetery Location: 8 miles northwest of Hampton, Virginia, on Route #27, thence .5 mile east of Route #27 on a private road, thence 1 mile west on a private road. Hampton, Virginia DATE: 1850, date of oldest grave. OWNERS: Mr. Howard Sinclair Collier. (1937) DESCRIPTION: This cemetery is about a half mile from the house. There is an acre of land in the cemetery, with square gray stone posts seven inches wide on each side and five feet high, set about fifty feet apart, all around it, with a hole through the posts so that a chain could be run through them, but the chains have been taken away. A road which goes by the back of the field, runs through the north corner of the cemetery. It has grown up with weeds and briers, and cows are allowed to graze there; no one takes any interest in it. There are many graves here with markers which have only the initials on them; no dates of any kind to tell anything about them. Some of these graves must have been enclosed with a brick wall, as a brick wall extends above the ground about a foot, on top of which is laid the inscription slab.
