OWNERS: St. John’s Church. DESCRIPTION: A slab, of slate, bearing the coat of arms of the family. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Captain George Wray, founder of the American family of Wrays, of Poplar, in London, England, came to Virginia before the Revolution and settled in Hampton, Virginia. He seems to have been a man of wealth and position. His grave in Old St. Johns Churchyard is marked by the only slate slab bearing an English coat of arms now to be seen in the town. He was born in Middlesex County, England, in 1697 and died in Hampton, Virginia, April 17, 1758. The following is the inscription found on the old slab at the grave: Under this stone lieth interred the body of Captain George Wray who departed this life the 17 of April 1758 in the 61st year of his age.
