A veteran of World War 1, Mr. Brown was self-employed. He had resided in Portsmouth since 1939. He was a native of Williamston, NC, and the husband of the late Mrs. Ida Langley Brown. Well-known in both Virginia and his native state, he was a member of Mt. Nebo RZUA Church. Surviving him are five daughters, Mrs. Essie Lee, Mrs. Sudie Panton, Miss Ruth Brown, all of New York City; Mrs. Maggie Baber, Yonkers, NY; and Mrs. Alice Wingfield, Portsmouth; and four sons, William Jr., Alfred, Haywood and Hubert Brown, all of Portsmouth. Also, four sisters, Mrs. Earl Teel, Norfolk; Mrs. Bessie Purvis, Elizabeth City, NC; Mrs. Rosa Gardard, and Mrs. (name not included)of Williamston NC; one brother, Aaron Brown, Williamston; and 21 grandchildren. Funeral arrangements handled by the Veterans Administration. Burial was in Hampton National Cemetery.
