She had been in a coma about a week before she died. She was the daughter of the late George and Elsie Washington. Mrs. Laws witnessed the building of Hampton Institute and was a friend and employee of General Samuel Chapman Armstrong, founder of the school. Along with other stalwart Christians, Mrs. Laws helped to organize in “Slabtown” the Zion Baptist Church, which later moved to its present site on County street. The deceased was a member of the Womans Forum, Philathea Bible Class, and the Eastern Star Lodge. Funeral services were held at Zion Baptist Church last Friday at 4 p.m. with the pastor, the Rev. J. Dett Marshburn, officiating. Surviving relatives are one sister, two daughters, three sons, three grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. Burial took place at Bassette’s Cemetery, Hampton.
