HANOVER COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Old Macon Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Old Macon graveyard: 1937 Sept. 11 Research made by James Archer Evans Cemetery Location: Out Route #360 7 miles from Richmond, Virginia, to intersection of Route #156; southeast on Route #156 2 miles to private lane; south on private lane 1 mile, 10 miles northeast of Richmond, Virginia. Hanover County, Virginia DATE: Approximately 1750. OWNERS: William Macon, Thomas Macon, James Govan 1799, Dr. William F. Gaines 1840, Wellington McGhee, Basel Garthright, W.A. Smiley, owner and occupant (1937). DESCRIPTION: This fine old burying ground is situated on a wooded knoll, one half mile east of the old Pow-hite mansion. Many graves are without markers and the ground is covered with periwinkle and honeysuckle vines. The plot is fifty feet wide by one hundred feet long and is shaded by fine old elm, hickory and chestnut trees. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The following markers remain and are well preserved. Sacred to the memory of Elizabeth Govan wife of James Govan Sr. who was born on the 23rd of Sept. 1764 and died the 15th of Oct. 1822 James Govan Tyler Son of Dr. Wat. H. and Margaret Tyler Born April 7th, 1830 Died Aug. 9th 1857 Mary G. wife of John Hill and daughter of Sarah and Wm. F.
