HANOVER COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Sheppard Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, The Sheppard graveyard to Scotchtown: 1937 Nov. 19 Research made by James Archer Evans Cemetery Location: 12 miles north from Richmond, Virginia on Route #1, thence 9 miles northwest from Ashland, Virginia on Route #54, thence 3 miles northeast on Route #685, thence .5 mile northeast from house. Hanover County, Virginia DATE: Approximately 1750. OWNERS: Reserved for Forsythe family, Sheppard family, Taylor family and Doswell family. DESCRIPTION: This is one of the most beautiful old burial plots in the county. A faint path, much overgrown with scrub pines, dogwood, weeds and vines, leads from “Scotchtown” one half mile northeast, to it. It covers about a half acre and is shaded by many fine old oaks, pines and cedars. A thick carpet of periwinkle covers almost the entire lot. Many of the original colony are buried here, none of the graves being marked. There is however a beautiful granite monument with eight smaller slabs around it, all of which are inscribed. There is also a beautiful granite shaft with a heavy cross on it. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The large granite monument is inscribed as follows: In memory of Dr. Joseph M. Sheppard of Hanover County Born Sept. 23rd, 1790 Died Aug. 7th, 1861 His wife Elizabeth Pollard Born June 20th, 1793 Died Jan. 31st, 1864 and their children “An the shall be mine, saith The Lord of Hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels.” The smaller stones are inscribed as follows: Belle Obt. 1853 AET. 23 Ellen Obt. 1842 AET. 18 Joseph Obt. 1840 AET. 18 Sallie Obt. 1839 AET. 20 Bettie Obt. 1837 AET. 23 Caroline Obt. 1835 AET. 4 Christiana Obt. 1835 AET. 3 John Wm. Obt. 1851 AET. 30 The granite shaft with the cross bears the following words: To the pure and honored memory of Lavinia Daughter of Dr. Joseph M. and Elizabeth Sheppard Died April 8th, 1880 Sweet, scholarly, accomplished, wise, given to hospitality, noble, christian, gentle woman, daughter, sister and friend. Numbered with the saints in glory everlasting. The other marked graves have the following inscriptions: Taylor In memory of Mary Jane Wife of Thomas F. Taylor Born Aug. 17th, 1838 Died Nov. 14th, 1865 Leah Temple Wife of Thomas F. Taylor Born Nov. 29th, 1840 Died Oct. 5th, 1899 Asleep in Jesus, peaceful rest, those waking in a memory blest. In memory of Bettie Doswell daughter of George W. and Ann Elizabeth Doswell of Hanover County, Va. Who died Aug. 2nd, 1883 in the 24th year of her age. I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name, thou art mine, for I am the Lord thy God, the holy one of Israel, thy Saviour.
