HANOVER COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Thompson Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, The Thompson burying ground: 1936 Aug. 8 Research made by Mrs. D.L. Avery Cemetery Location: Northeast of Richmond, Virginia, on Route #360, for 10 miles; thence east on Route #606, for 1.3 miles, on the north side of the road. Hanover County, Virginia DATE: 1775 is the earliest date inscribed on any tombstone. OWNERS: (blank) DESCRIPTION: This graveyard is about a mile and a half from the site of Old Church. It is thought that the two were at one time connected. Here there are fifteen or twenty graves that are marked with wooden fence enclosures, or just a post or some shrubbery. The one large and well preserved stone is at the head of a child’s grave and a tree, probably a hundred years old, is growing immediately from the grave. The stone is about two feet wide and stands about four feet high. It is about six inches in thickness. It is carefully carved, showing an hour glass design, indicating the brevity of the child’s life, with wings on either side of the hour glass. Under the wings on the left side is a spade or shovel while under the other wing is what appears to be an open book. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The stones carry the following inscriptions: Here Lyeth the Body of John Thompson, son of John and Ann Thompson borne 17th of March 1735 ˝ And departed this life the 8th of November 1736 W. J. Rice Apr. 28, 1894 Mar. 5, 1901 Our informant tells us that the last inscription above is that of a man whose brother and sister are still living but she does not know just where.
