History: Emmanuel Church (Blair Parish) began just before the War between the States when its Gothic-Revival edifice was built in 1860 as a church within colonial Henrico Parish. Amongst the founders were Mr. Daniel Kerr Stewart and his brother Mr. John Stewart of nearby Brook Hill, who supported the minister and gave the land and building, and the Reverend Richard Hooker Wilmer, who later was the only bishop consecrated by the Church in the Confederate States and served as the second Bishop of Alabama. Divine Service was first held by DR. Wilmer in January of 1859 at the Brook School near the intersection of today's Azalea Avenue and Brook Road and the first Vestry was elected in April of 1860. The Right Reverend John Johns consecrated Emmanuel Church on July 6, 1860. Emmanuel's architect may have been Clifton Hall of Providence, Rhode Island. Emmanuel Church was near considerable military activity during the Civil War. Troops from both sides occupied the church property, wounded soldiers were treated there, and many soldiers lie buried in its cemetery. The church, however, weathered the War safely.
