The submitter has given permissionto the USGenWeb Archives to store the file permanently for free access. http://www.usgwarchives.net *********************************************************************** Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection Dorton, John (Dolton) Pen. 124 1786-1802 Soldier-1st Virginia Regiment Henrico County Widow: Mary Also See: Burton,John--Minton, John November 12 1788 Sworn before me Nathaniel Wilkerson: James Valentine of lawful age being first sworn before me a Justice of the Peace of the County of Henrico deposed and saith that he happened in Williamsburg sometime in November 1776 when the deponent was informed by Nathaniel Crawly that John Dorton a soldier in the service of the United States had a night or two before then said died on the roadside in sight of Nathaniel Crawly's house, and the deponent was shown a grave and told that the said Dorton was buyed therein, and in the month of January following, this department was requested by the widow of the said Dorton to apply for the said Dorton's death in which he did, but the Captain of the Company to which he belonged being absent he failed to get them. And further saith not. Signed: James Vallentine I do with the advice of Council hereby certify that Mary Dorton, widow of John Dorton late a private in the 1st Virginia Regiment who died in the service of the United States is allowed the sum of twelve pounds yearly to commence from the first day of January 1788.
