Simmons, was born in 1859 to  Roley M. and Malinda Nancy (Helms) Simmons.  He lived in  Floyd, Floyd Co., VA, for many years.  He practiced medicine and was Superintendent of Schools there.  He was also the Republican nominee for Congress in the Fifth District.  In 1887 he married Elizabeth "Lizzie" Morgan, daughter of Capt. William H. Morgan, Civil War hero and author. The Simmons' children were:  Nancy Lee who married L. A. O'Brien of Winston-Salem, NC; Richard Morgan married Margaret Sydnor of Mt. Airy, NC; Anna; Alice; and John W., Jr. who married Ruth Long of Charlottesville, VA. Dr. John Simmons and his family moved to Martinsville, VA, in 1898, where he continued, at least until 1920 (1920c), his practice of medicine.  John's brother, Dr. Thomas Simmons, also practiced in Martinsville, VA.
