Smith Charlie Woodrow Smith, a Martinsvilie Police Officer for 27 yea rs before retiring in 1970, died Thursday, May 23,1996, at Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County. He was 80. Smith lived at 1017 Columbus St., Martinsville. Born Dec. 23, 1915, in Mayodan, N.C., he was a son of the late Martin L. Smith and the late Drucilla Hopkins Smith. He also was preceded in death by two brothers, Howard Smith and Luther Smith; and a sister, Ollie Reid. He was a longtime member and deacon at Stone Memorial Christian Church in Collinsville. Surviving are his wife, Augusta Lawless Smith of the home; two brothers, Johnnie Smith and Arthur Smith, both of Stoneville, N.C. two sisters, Katie Sparks of Stoneville and Gladys Hopkins of KernersviUe, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews. The body will be placed in Stone Memorial Christian Church today where the family will receive friends from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. At other times, friends will be received at tlie home, The funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Stone Memorial with Minister Lawrence Harris and Johnnie Baldwin officiating. Burial will follow in the Joyce family cemetery in Sandy Ridge, N.C. Memorials may be made to the Stone Memorial Christian Church Building Fund. Rose Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
