HIGHLAND COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Benson Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Benson graveyard: 1936 Nov. 12 Research made by Howard Hiner Cemetery Location: 1 mile north of Vanderpool, Virginia; 3 miles south of Monterey, Virginia, on the farm of Dr. A.W. Miller, near the old Benson house. Highland County, Virginia DATE: 1847, possibly earlier. OWNERS: Mathias Benson and his descendants, Doctor A.W. Miller, present owner. (1836) DESCRIPTION: This is a private graveyard of the Benson and Jordan families. It is in bad condition. Only a part of the graves have been fenced in and this is partly down. Brush and undergrowth cover the graves and livestock roam over the section. Some of the markers are lying on the ground. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: It is known that the Benson family settled in the county as early as 1782. Mathias Benson was on the roll of Captain Jacob Hull’s company in 1814.
