It is on the right side of the road leading to Mill Gap and is on a hill across and on the other side of a tributary of Jackson River. It is about one eighth of a mile from the road. Highland County, Virginia DATE: Unknown. OWNERS: Dinwiddie and Stephenson families, Boyd Stephenson, present owner. (1936) DESCRIPTION: The graveyard contains approximately one fourth of an acre and it is in an open pasture with no fence around it. Cattle graze over the sunken graves. Some of the graves are marked with common stones but there are no inscriptions except one large stone marking a grave enclosed with an iron fence. The inscription on this stone dates after 1865. It is stated that some of the Stephensons requested that stock be allowed to graze over the graves. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The Dinwiddie family were among the earliest settlers in this section of the county. There were four brothers who entered claims for land here as early as 1769. A patent was obtained in 1781. The amount taken up at different times under different patents totaled 1215 acres. After the death of the last surviving member of this family living in the county, which occurred in 1855, the land was inherited by relatives living in the est. The administrator was slow in settling the estate and the proceeds of the farm, which sold for $16,000.00, went into Confederate money, a total loss. James Dinwiddie, one of the original settlers was killed at Point Pleasant in 1774. SOURCES OF INFORMATION: Informant: Willie Gibson, Vanderpool, Virginia Augusta County Records.
