HIGHLAND COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Gilmor Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Gilmor graveyard: 1936 Nov. 28 Research made by Howard Hiner Cemetery Location: 1 mile south of Mill Gap, Virginia Highland County, Virginia DATE: 1758 OWNERS: E. J. Crummet, present owner. (1936) DESCRIPTION: It is a private graveyard and is no longer used for burying purposes. It is enclosed with a wire fence which is partly down. Bushes have grown up, but were cut and burned recently. The condition of this graveyard is only fair. This is a very old graveyard, having been used as far back as 1812. Samuel Gilmor buried here in 1848 came to this county and purchased land here in 1827. He was a Revolutionary soldier and was severely wounded in the Waxhow massacre in 1780, having received severe saber cuts on the head. It is said this wound left a mark two inches wide, and that a man could place two fingers in the groove on his head. He lived to be very old and was blind the last years of his life. He was a native of Pennsylvania, but came here from Rockingham County. He had two grandsons who served in the Confederate service, one being a captain. The Ruckmans buried here were of English descent, the pioneer coming to this county from New Jersey in 1784. The pioneer settler himself was buried elsewhere, but at least two of his sons were buried here. The inscriptions are: Samuel Gilmor Mar. 25, 1760 Jan. 25, 1848 Revolutionary Soldier Elenor Gilmor Jan. 1758 July 18, 1832 Jesse S.
