HIGHLAND COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Green Hill Church Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Green Hill Church Graveyard: 1936 Oct. 9 Research made by Howard Hiner Cemetery Location: Adjacent to Green Hill Methodist Episcopal Church, in the village of Mill Gap, Virginia, 7 miles southwest of Monterey, Virginia on Route #220. Highland County, Virginia DATE: 1852, date of oldest inscription. OWNERS: Peter Bird and his descendants, Green Hill Methodist Episcopal Church, present owner. (1936) DESCRIPTION: This burial ground contains more than one-half acre of land and is enclosed with a painted board fence. It is in very good condition, free of brush and undergrowth, and the tombstones are erect and in place. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: A Union soldier is buried here near the entrance gate. His name is unknown and the grave is unmarked. He died here while the Union Army was passing through during the War Between the States. Inscriptions: Elizabeth H. wife of David Bird Died July 18, 1852 David Bird Virginia P.V.T., Shively’s Co. 7 Va. Mil.
