HIGHLAND COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Gum Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Gum graveyard: 1936 Oct. 6 Research made by Howard Hiner Cemetery Location: On the land of Isaac Gum, near Mill Gap, Virginia Highland County, Virginia DATE: 1804, date of oldest inscription. OWNERS: Abraham Gum and his descendants. DESCRIPTION: This is a private burying ground and it is enclosed with a board fence. Brush and briars have been allowed to grow up and it is in very bad condition. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: There is a marker in the graveyard dated 1804, which is the oldest inscription found in Highland County, although there are probably older graves which are not marked. Abraham Gum, who is buried here, was a son of John Gum, who came to Highland County in 1766. He had a brother, Isaac Gum, who was a soldier in the War of the Revolution and was at Yorktown when the British surrendered. Inscriptions: Grandfather Abraham Gum died 1804 Aged 50 yrs. His wife, Priscilla Died July 7, 1842 Aged 84 yrs. Otho son of A. & P. Gum Died Feb. 17, 1840 aged 49 yrs. William son of O & E Gum Died Dec. 1827 Aged 6 yrs. Sarah E. McLaughlin Died Apr. 3, 1853 Aged 23 yrs. William H. son of A.W. & Margaret A.
