HIGHLAND COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Jones Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Thomas Jones graveyard: 1936 Dec. 3 Research made by Howard Hiner Cemetery Location: On Cowpasture, River, 4 miles north Route #250. Highland County, Virginia DATE: Not Known. OWNERS: Clay Botkin, present owner. (1936) DESCRIPTION: It is a private graveyard of the Jones families. The condition is rather bad. Almost all the graves have markers, but many of the stones are lying on the ground. It is partly fenced with an iron fence, but is open to pasture. This was at one time one of the most up-to-date graveyards in the county. It is understood the different family connections are planning on building a new fence, and again getting the graveyard in nice shape. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The pioneer Jones who settled here in 1795 came from New York. The Jones family has been very prominent in this and adjoining counties. Thomas Jones buried here in 1848, and son of the pioneer Henry, was a prominent public man of Pendleton Co. The inscriptions are: Thomas Jones Born Sept. 11, 1787 Died July 9, 1848 One of the Pioneers of temperance in West Va. Mary Ann Wife of Thomas Jones Died May 26, 1855 in the 68 yr. of her age Martha M. Jones Died May 14, 1856 in the 6 yr. of her age SOURCES OF INFORMATION: This information was obtained by visit to the site, from Clay Botkin, E.B. Jones of Monterey, Va., A.S.
