HIGHLAND COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Malcomb Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Malcomb graveyard: 1936 Nov. 16 Research made by Howard Hiner Cemetery Location: 3 miles north of McDowell, Virginia on public road, near home of Thomas Malcomb. Highland County, Virginia DATE: 1850. OWNERS: Joseph Malcomb and his descendants, Thomas Malcomb, present owner. (1936) DESCRIPTION: The graveyard is in a corner of a meadow and is not enclosed. It is in poor condition. The only markers are common native stones placed in the ground. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: One marker shows there were people named Thorpe buried here. Very little is known of these people. They were of Scotch-Irish descent and came to this section about 1810. A member of this family, without an education, acquired a practical knowledge of surveying, constructing his own instruments. The Malcombs were pioneer settlers in this locality, having come to the county in 1752. Joseph Malcomb was a miller. The only inscription: Mar.
