HIGHLAND COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – McDowell Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, McDowell cemetery: 1936 Sept. 15 Research made by Howard Hiner Cemetery Location: In the town of McDowell, Virginia opposite the Presbyterian Church. Highland County, Virginia DATE: 1833. OWNERS: McDowell Presbyterian Church. DESCRIPTION: The cemetery is in good condition and is enclosed with a wire fence. The stones are in place. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: It is stated that a number of soldiers were buried in this cemetery after the Battle of McDowell, during the War Between the States, but none of their graves are marked. Some of the artillery was stationed near here during the battle. Major Peter Hull, who was buried here, was a large land holder, owning several thousand acres of land. He was a member of the Virginia Legislature and held various local offices. His father was an officer in the Revolutionary War and was also a member of the Legislature. This branch of the Hull family is locally extinct in the male line. Inscriptions: Major Peter Hull Born Jan. 11, 1783 Died Sept. 23, 1834 Aged 71 yrs. 8 mos. 2 ds. Rachel wife of Peter Hull Born Nov. 29, 1784 Died Jan. 13, 1857 Samuel Thompson son of Giles & Catherine Deviar Born Jan. 8, 1855 Died July 23, 1857 In memory of Susan wife of John W. Frazer and daughter of John Sitlington Born May 4, 1815 Died at Cloverdale, Va., Oct. 6, 1843 At 28 years 5 mos. 2 das. Her life was adorned by the graces of the Christian character and in death she was sustained by the soothing consolations of Religion, and the hope of a glorious immortality.
