Highland County, Virginia DATE: None. OWNERS: George Hooks (1937) DESCRIPTION: It is a small private graveyard situated on as hill top, and is not enclosed by a fence thus being in an open pasture. The only markers are common stones placed in the ground and bearing no inscriptions. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This is the thing to mark the memory of the Morton family who once owned land and lived here, yet there is nothing to show the casual visitor who was buried here. The Mortons were of English descent and came to this county in 1785. The owned land at this place in 1800. It is quite probable that many of the graves here date prior to 1860. Edward Morton of this family was in the confederate service and was killed at Williamsport in 1862. This family is now extinct in this county. SOURCES OF INFORMATION: Information was obtained from Mrs. George Hooks, from land records, and from study of family history as recorded in Local History.
