HIGHLAND COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Rymer Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Rymer graveyard: 1937 Feb. 4 Research made by Howard Hiner Cemetery Location: 3 miles north of Monterey, Va. Highland County, Virginia DATE: None. OWNERS: Present Owners (1937) Mrs. Markwood Propst. DESCRIPTION: This is a private Graveyard, but is at present being used by a number of families. It is enclosed with a good fence and is in fair condition. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Although having no markers with inscriptions dated prior to 1860, this is a very old Graveyard. George Rymer the pioneer of this family was a soldier of the Revolution, having been born in England in 1750, came to America 1763, served in the Revolution, died 1845. It may be recalled that after the Battle of McDowell the Federal forces retreated by way of the straight creek road, and on this very hill where this graveyard is situated a second battle was expected. The Federals in hearing of Jackson’s pursuit formed a line of battle here, but with the continued advance of Jackson, they disbanded and moved on into West Virginia by way of Forks of Water. Inscriptions, none. SOURCES OF INFORMATION: This information was obtained from Mrs. I.H. Samples a daughter of Thomas Rymer. From Mrs. Lucy Hiner who lived near here just after the Civil War. From Mrs. Don Sullenberger of the U.D.C. who relates about the course of retreat of the army after the Battle of McDowell, and from personal visit to the site. ___________________________________________________________________ Copyright.
