HIGHLAND COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Shinaberry Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Shinaberry graveyard: 1936 Sept. 11 Research made by Howard Hiner Cemetery Location: In an open field, high up on the side of the mountain, about 2 miles from New Hampden. Highland County, Virginia DATE: 1821, date of oldest grave. OWNERS: John Shinaberry and his descendants, Chap Halterman, present owner. (1936) DESCRIPTION: This private burying ground is no longer used. There is no fence and it is overgrown with brush and weeds. It is in bad condition and the tombstones are lying on the ground. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The Shinaberry name has become extinct in the county, although at one time the family owned considerable land. Sallie Shinaberry was a very high tempered lady and was known far and wide for her independent personality. It is said that at all times she commanded the highest respect from everyone with whom she came in contact. Inscriptions: Jacob Shinaberry Died 1821 Aged not known Rest in peace Erected by his daughter-in-law as a tribute of respect. Margaret wife of Jacob Shinaberry Sr. Died 1850 Aged about 83 yrs.
