HIGHLAND COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Varner Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Varner graveyard: 1936 Sept. 29 Research made by Howard Hiner Cemetery Location: 1 mile due north of Monterey, Virginia, on a woodland farm, about 1 mile from the nearest road. Highland County, Virginia DATE: 1862. OWNERS: A. D. Judy, Monterey, Virginia, present owner. (1936) DESCRIPTION: This is a private graveyard and has not been used for a great many years. It is surrounded by a wire fence. Brush and shrubbery have been allowed to grow and partly obscure the graves. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The Varner family settled in Highland County before 1800. A number of the descendants of the original family still live here. During the early days it was customary to have the family burial ground near the house. It is often wondered why this graveyard was located so far from the main roads. Even though the Varners owned the land the house was a mile distant and the dead were taken through the woods to this isolated spot to be buried. Inscription: David Varner was wounded at the battle of Port Republic Died July 13, 1862 Aged 22 yrs. Peace to his remains SOURCES OF INFORMATION: Informant: Mrs. J.K. Eye.
