HIGHLAND COUNTY, VA - CEMETERIES – Wiley Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, Wiley graveyard: 1936 Dec. 10 Research made by Howard Hiner Cemetery Location: 12 miles south of Monterey, Virginia Highland County, Virginia DATE: None. OWNERS: John M. Colow (1936) DESCRIPTION: This was a private graveyard of the Wiley family who once lived here and is no longer in use. It has no fence around it, and is open to pasture, large expensive stones were erected here, but are not in very nice shape at present, the condition shows no care in the upkeep has been shown for several years. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The Wiley family settled here in 1773. Up until recent years a log house stood here with port holes in the attic, being known as the old Wiley house. This was the last fortified house against Indian attacks to be left standing in this county. Among the first settlers Robert Wiley, Sr. and Robert Jr. were soldiers of the Dunmore War. It is not known by this writer whether they were buried here or not, but it is presumed they were. The inscriptions are: John P. Wiley 1806 – 1858 Robert H. Wiley Born Mar. 21, 1808 Died Feb. 19, 1853 Aged 44 yrs, 10 mos. and 28 days How sweet to lay out sainted dead in such a place to sleep.
