Hamlin Cemetery Location: On the north side of Pierce Street, between Brown Avenue and Allen Avenue, City Point, Virginia. Hopewell, Virginia DATE: 1847, date of oldest grave. OWNERS: Church. DESCRIPTION: This graveyard is well cared for and many of the graves are covered with ivy. There are a number of beautiful magnolia and cedar trees and it is enclosed with hedges. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: There are many graves, but the only tombstones where the deaths occurred before 1865, have the following inscriptions: Sacred to the memory of Betty F. Hardy wife of Samuel Hardy who departed this life Dec. 3, 1861 Aged 23 years Sacred to the memory of Mary E. Porter wife of William P. Porter who departed this life Sept. 28, 1847 in the 38th year of her age Faithful in all life’s duties she rests till the sound of the last trumpet.
