HOPEWELL, VA - CEMETERIES – Old Sailor’s Cemetery ----¤¤¤---- Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection LVA Titled Files: Survey Report, The old sailor’s cemetery site: 1937 Aug. 9 Research made by Elsie D. Hamlin Cemetery Location: At the head of Main Street, between Main Street and the Appomattox River. Hopewell, Virginia DATE: About 1811. OWNERS: The land belonged to the Eppes’ estate, it being a part of the land granted to Captain Francis Eppes in 1635, by the Crown of England, until 1937 when it was bought by the Bland District School Board, the present owner. DESCRIPTION: This cemetery has been in disuse for so long a period that no grave markings are noted on the surface of the ground, with the exception of two old headstones falling into decay, located in the rear of the property. Workmen are now removing stumps and clearing the place, as the new Patrick Copeland School is to be erected here. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Many years ago City Point was a place of activity, and a Port of Entry for foreign shipping, and when a sailor died in City Point and his body was not claimed, it was buried in this cemetery. Mrs. Macon Batte, of City Point, says that she has heard her father, the late Captain Samuel N. Cook, say that all of them were foreigners and were buried in this cemetery. There are two tombstones, one of which has decayed so much that the inscription is illegible but “Jona Sp Melso, a native of Sweden, Born October 28, 1811, died April 1855”.
