Isle of Wight County, Virginia - Deeds - William J. SHEPHERD, and wife to Joseph HOLLADAY October 6, 1856 ***************** Isle of Wight County Deed Book 39 Page 404 This indenture made this 14th day of June, 1856, between William J. Shepherd and Eliza A. Shepherd, his wife, of the first part, and Joseph Holladay of the second part all of the County of Isle of Wight and State of Virginia. Witnesseth; that the said William J. Shepherd and Eliza A. his wife for and in consideration of the sum of five hundred dollars to them in hand paid by the said Joseph Holladay at and before the sealing and delivery of these presents the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged have granted bargained and sold and by these presents doth grant bargain and sell unto the said Joseph Holladay a certain parcel of land being a part of the tract which said Shepherd purchased of James E. Wright situated and being in the County of Isle of Wight and containing forty acres more or less, bounded by the land of the said Shepherd on the south, on the east and north by said Holladays. And on the west by Giles Daniels. To have and to hold the said parcel of land to the said Joseph Holladay his heirs and assigns forever, and the said Wm. J. Shepherd and Eliza his wife for themselves their heirs and their assigns hereby covenant and agree with the said Holladay that they will warrant and defend the title of said land to the said Holladay free from the claims of all persons whomsoever. In witness whereof the said Wm. J. Shepherd and Eliza Ann his wife have here unto set their hands and seals this day and year above written. Wm. J. Shepherd (seal) Eliz. A. Shepherd (seal) Isle of Wight County to wit, We, Jesse A. Parker and James P. Jordan, Justices of the peace for the County aforesaid do certify that Eliza Ann Shepherd the wife of William J. Shepherd whose names are signed to the writing annexed bearing date of the 14th day of June, 1856, personally appeared before us in the County aforesaid, and being examined by us privily and apart from her husband and having the writing aforesaid fully explained to her she the said Eliza Ann Shepherd acknowledged the said writing to be her act, and declared that she had willingly executed the same and does not was to retract it.
