Isle of Wight Co., VA, Deed Book 47 (1883-1884), page 505 

This deed made this 31st day of December, 1883, between John Shepherd 
and Jane R., his wife, Wm. M. Shepherd and Mary E. Shepherd all of 
the State of Va., of the first part,  and Susanna Owen (wife of James 
Owen) of the State of  Va. of the other part, Witness, That in 
consideration of five hundred dollars, the said parties of the first 
part do grant with general warranty unto the said Susanna Owen and 
her heirs and assigns forever, the following real estate, to-wit: 
that part of the tract of land of which William J. Shepherd died 
seized and possessed in the County of Isle of Wight, Va. The 
undersigned heirs of the said Wm. J. Shepherd, all being twenty one 
years old and having agreed to divisions as set forth in the deeds 
this day made by the undersigned interested parties to each other and 
bounded as follows, commencing at the chinkapen stob, in from of the 
old dwelling house, and running a easterly direction to a cherry tree, 
thence down the branch to the land of Joseph Holiday, thence along 
the line of said Holiday to the marsh, thence up a branch to a walnut 
tree that stands about twenty yards back of the dwelling house, 
thence a northerly direction to a chinkapen stob, thence a westerly 
direction to a gum tree, thence a branch to the line of T. Q. Gilliam, 
thence down the line of said Gilliam to the land of James Owen, thence 
along his line to the beginning, and is supposed to contain twenty 
seven acres. And the parties of the first part covenant that they have
the right to convey the said lands to the grantee, and that she shall 
have quiet possession of the said lands, and that they will execute 
such further assurances of the said land as may be required. Witness 
the following signatures and seals this day named above.

State of Virginia, Isle of Wight Co., to-wit:

I Geo. M. Waddill a Notary Public for the County of Isle of Wight 
and State of Va., do certify that John Shepherd and Jane R. Shepherd 
his wife, Wm. M. Shepherd and Mary E. Shepherd, whose names are signed 
to the above writing, bearing date the 31st of Dec, 1883, personally 
appeared before me in my County aforesaid, and acknowledged the same, 
and I further certify that Jane R. Shepherd the wife of John Shepherd 
was examined by me privily and apart from her husband and had the 
writing fully explained to her, when she declared that she had 
willingly executed the same and does not wish to retract it. Given 
under my hand this 31st day of Dec., 1883.

1884. This deed from Jno. Shepherd & wife & others to Susanna Owen, 
was admitted to record on the annexed certificate of G. M. Waddill, 
a Notary Public.
