Isle of Wight Co., VA, Deed Book 47, page 544 

This deed made this 31st day of Dec., 1883 between John Shepherd and Jane 
R. his wife, James Owen and Susanna his wife and Mary E. Shepherd all of 
the County of Isle of Wight, Va. of the first part and William M. Shepherd of 
the other part, of the State of Va. Witness: that in consideration of the sum 
of five hundred dollars the parties of the first part to grant with general 
warranty unto the said William M. Shepherd and his heirs and assigns forever, 
the following (the following) real estate, to-wit: That part of the tract of 
land of which William J. Shepherd died seized and possessed, in the County of 
Isle of Wight, Va. (the undersigned heirs of the said William J. Shepherd all 
being twenty one years old and having agreed to divisions as set forth in the 
deeds this day made by the undersigned interested parties to each other) and 
bounded as follows: commencing at a chinkapin stob, back of the house and 
on the (lain) leading to the county road and running north to  R. oak, thence 
a westerly direction to a gum, on the branch and along the line Jos. Holiday 
to the lands of A. W. Daniel, thence along the line of the said Daniel to the 
lands of T. Q. Gilliam, thence to the land of Susanna Owen, and along her 
line to the beginning, and supposed to be twenty seven acres. And the 
parties of the first part covenant that they have the right to convey the said 
lands to the grantee, and that he shall have quiet possession of the same, 
and that they will execute such further assurances of the said land as may 
be requisite.

State of Virginia, Isle of Wight Co, to-wit:

I,  Geo. M. Waddill a Notary Public for the County of Isle of Wight, State of 
Va. do certify that John Shepherd and Jane R. Shepherd his wife, James 
Owen and Susanna Owen his wife and Mary E. Shepherd whose names are 
signed to the writing above personally appeared before me in my County 
aforesaid and acknowledged the same, and I further certify that Jane R. 
Shepherd wife of John Shepherd and Susanna Owen, wife of James Owen, 
were examined by me privily and apart from their husbands, and had the 
writing fully explained to them when they declared (the) had willingly 
executed the same and does not wish to retract it.
Given under my hand this 31st day of Dec., 1883.

day of February, 1884, this deed from John Shepherd & others to Wm. 
M. Shepherd was admitted to record on the annexed certificate of G.
