VA Isle of Wight Co., VA, Deed Book 21, p. 444 1 Mar 1816 Dory MOUNTFORD, relinquishment of dower Isle of Wight County Court, The Commonwealth of Virginia, John LAWRENCE and Exum ELEY, Gentlemen Justices Greetings: Whereas William MOUNTFORD and Dory his wife of the said County by their certain Indenture of Bargain and Sale bearing date the 15th day of November 1813, have sold and conveyed unto Lemuel LOW of the said County the fee simple estate of in and to one certain Tract or Parcel of Land, lying and being in the County aforesaid and bounded as is expressed in the said Indenture, and whereas the said Dory MOUNTFORD wife of the said William MOUNTFORD cannot conveniently travel to our County Court, or to the General Court of the State of Virginia to relinquish her right of Dower in the land in the said Indenture contained and which is hereto annexed: Therefore we do give unto yu or any two or more of you that you do personally go to the said Dory MOUNTFORD wife of the said William MOUNTFORD and receive her relinquishment of Dower in the said Land, and examine her privily and apart from her said husband, and whether she doth the same freely and voluntarily without the persuation or threats of her said husband and whether she be willing the same shall be recorded in the County Court of Isle of Wight or in the General Court of the State, and when you have gone to the said Dory MOUNTFORD wife of the said William MOUNTFORD and examined her as aforesaid, that you certify the Same from under your hands and Seals sending them there this writ. Witness Nathaniel YOUNG Clerk of our said Court at the courthouse the 27th day of February 1816 in the 40th Year of the Commonwealth- Nathaniel YOUNG March the 1.st 1816: We do hereby certify that we have examined Dory MOUNFORD wife of William MOUNTFORD separately and apart from her said husband and she saith that she doth hereby relinquish her right of Dower in the land above mentioned without the Persuation or threats of her said husband but doth it freely and voluntarily and that she is wiling the same should be recorded in the County Court of Isle of Wight, Given under our hands & Seals the day above mentioned- John LAWRENCE *Seal* Exum ELEY *Seal* Isle of Wight County Court, January the 6th 1817.
