Deed of Bargain & Sale 

This Indenture made concluded and agreed upon this twenty third day of 
December one thousand Seven hundred and twenty three Between Philip RAYFORD of 
the County of Isle of wight of the one part and John CROMPLER of the aforeSaid 
County of the other part 
Wittnesseth that the Said Philip RAYFORD for

And in Consideration of the Sum of Six Thousand pound of Tobacco att or before 
the ensealing and delivery of these presents to him in hand paid or secured to 
be paid by the said John CROMPLER the Receit whereof he said Phillip RAYFORD 
doth here by acknowledge and himself fully Satisfied and paid Hath granted 
bargained and Sould aliened and Confirmed And by these presents doth grant 
bargain alienate enfeoff and Confirm unto the said John CROMPLER his heirs and 
assigns for ever all that parcel of Land and plantation whereon Mathew RAYFORD 
lived being Two hundred Acres be it more or less 
formerly made Over and Conveyed ["v" altered from "f"] unto the said Phillip 
RAYFORD by Georg WILLIAMSON and Hester his wife as may appear by a Deed under 
their hands and Seals executed and past the twenty ninth day of January one 
March, One thousand Seven hundred and three according to the bounds and Limits 
therein Sett 
To Have and To Hold the above recited lands and plantation with its 
appurtenances thereunto belonging and the true Limits and bounds thereof in 
the said WILLIAMSON Deed expressed unto him the said John CROMPLER and his 
heirs and Assigns for ever against him the Said Philip RAYFORD and his heirs 
and Assignes and every person or persons claiming by from or under him Shall 
and will warrant and defend and And [sic] that he the Said John CROMPLER his 
heirs and Assigns Shall and may by Vertue of these presents have hould enjoy 
and possess quietly and peaceably the aforeSaid Land & plantation with all 
itts Rights and priviledges without any Lawful Lett, Suit trouble Interruption 
or disturbance of his the Said Philip RAYFORD his heirs and Assignes, or of 
any other person or persons lawfully Claiming by from or under him or them 
And the same be free and clear and freely and clearly exonerated and 
discharg'd, or otherwise Sufficiently saved harmless by the said Philip 
[underlined] RAYFORD from all former troubles or incumbrances whatsoever 
heretofore by him the said Philip RAYFORD created or done 
In Wittness whereof the Said Philip RAYFORD hath hereunto put his hand and 
Seal the day and year above Written

Memorandom that the within & above Named John CROMPLER was put into quiet and 
peaceable possession of the above recited Land & plantation by ye above Philip 
RAYFORD before Signing sealing & acknowledging of these p'sents} 

          At a Court held for Isle of Wight County the 27 day of Aprill 1724 
Philip RAYFORD came into Court presented & acknowledged this his Deed with 
Livery and Seezen to Jn.o CROMPLER and Sarah his Wife relinquished her right 
of Dower & it is Admitted to Record
