Sanders 9 Sept 1842 Page 3 State of North Carolina, Wake County &c On this 20th day of August 1839 personally appeared before this Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions for the County of Wake &c Mary Rand, a resident of Wake County aged seventy four years (74) who being first duly sworn according to law doth on her oath makes the following declaration in order to obtain the benefits of the provision made by the act of Congress passed July 3, 1838 entitled "An Act granting half pay & pensions to certain widows". That she is the widow of Walter Rand who served as a Soldier of Infantry in the Virginia Continental line during the Revolutionary War as will more fully appear by the annexed certificate from the Auditor's office of the Commonwealth of Virginia - she further declares that she was married to the said Walter Rand on the 13th day of February seventeen hundred and eighty three (1783) - that her husband the aforesaid Walter Rand died on the 17th day of December 1812 - that she was not married to him prior to his leaving the service but the marriage took place previous to first day of January seventeen hundred & ninety four viz at the time above stated - sworn to and subscribed on the day and year above written before Mary Rand At the same time personally appeared Johnson Busbee and Isaac Hutchins in open Court also being duly sworn according to law do on their oaths declare that they for sundry years knew Walter Rand the Husband of Mary Rand the above named applicant for a pension, that he removed to this County from the State of Virginia some fifty years ago about the year 1789 (as they have always understood & believe) sd time he then settled and continued to reside untill his death sometime in the colder part of the year 1812 - that he was a worthy good citizen and always had the reputation of having served in the Revolutionary War in this neighborhood in which he lived Sworn to and subscribed in open Court J. Debnam, two of the Justices of the Peace for this County and State above named William Crittenden who being duly sworn on the Holy Evangelist of Almighty God, doth on his oath declare that he is now a Pensioner of the United States, that he is now in his 79th year, that he served in the Revolutionary War in the Virginia Continental line & that while in said service he knew one Walter Rand who was in the same service and served in the same Regiment with him and that he was a Drummer in said service and that they served together twelve months or more & that after he quit said service he removed to North Carolina & settled on the Cape Fear River in Cumberland County and that he there became well acquainted with our William Rand, who was Clerk of the County Court of Cumberland County and that the said William Rand often spoke to him of his brother Walter Rand who was then living in Wake County and said that his Brother Walter had served in the Virginia Continental lines and the said William Rand is now dead - this deponent also states that while he was in the army the said Walter Rand often spoke of his Brother William Rand and the above William Rand spoken of by this deponent is the same William Rand whom this deponent knew in Cumberland County. Sworn to and subscribed before us this 5th day of March 1840, William Crittenden (his mark) Thos. R. Debnam, J.P. Jordan Womble, J.P. I Alfred Williams, Clerk of the Court of Pleas Quarter Sessions for Wake County certify that Thos. R. Debnam & Jordan Womble are magistrates as above and that the foregoing signatures purporting to be theirs is genuine. Debnam two of the Justices for the County and State aforesaid Parker Rand who being duly sworn on the Holy Evangelist of Almighty God doth on his oath declare that he is the son of Walter Rand late of this County dead and Mary Rand his widow who now lives in this County & is an applicant for a pension under the late act of Congress granting pensions to widows of deceased soldiers - that he has often heard his father speak of having been in the Revolutionary War in the Virginia Continental Line - he stated to the affiant that he enlisted at the age of sixteen & served three years, a part of the time as Drummer - that he received a ball wound in his leg at the Battle of Brandywine the scar of which he often showed this affiant - that he was discharged in the winter of 1779-1780 near Philadelphia & walked home on the snow and Ice - this affiant further states that William Rand the Clerk of Cumberland County Court spoken of by William Crittenden in his deposition on this sheet was a Brother of his Father Walter Rand - This affiant further states that he would have heretofore made this same affidavit in behalf of the application of his Mother for a pension under this act of Congress if he had supposed it necessary but not supposing it to be requisite believing that the other testimony produced was sufficient he has heretofore forbourned to give this statement but he now makes it for the purpose of endeavoring fully to verify the facts satisfactorily to the Pension Office. State of North Carolina } Wake County } On this the 25th day of January 1840, personally appeared before us two of the acting Justices of the Peace for this County and State aforesaid James Woodward a Citizen & Resident of said County who being duly sworn in the Holy Evangelist of Almighty God doth on his oath declare that Jesse Osborne decd late of said County who was a Revolutionary Soldier and on the Pension Roll of North Carolina and who departed this life some time in the month of Feby. in 1839 A.D. has often told this affiant that he knew Walter Rand of this County as a Revolutionary soldier that he (the said Jesse Osborne) served with him in the old war and that the said Walter Rand was a Drummer in said service and this affiant further states that this Walter Rand of whom the said Jesse spoke was Walter Rand the Husband of the widow Mrs. Mary Rand now of this County and this affiant further states that he has heard James Deford who was an old and respectable man of this County (& died some eight or ten years since) that he the said James Deford was raised in Isle of Wight County Virginia in the same neighborhood with Walter Rand and that the said Walter Rand served in the Virginia Continental line with him and that he was [remainder of this section not available in record] Pages 9-10 October 7, 1938 Mrs. Jerome A. Eaker 107 East Main Street Norwalk, Ohio Dear Madam: Reference is made to your requests relative to soldiers of the Revolutionary War, Robert Allison, William Lamkin, Peter Lamkin, Griffin Lewis Lamkin, and soldiers with the surname Rand of Wake County, North Carolina. Revolutionary War data furnished by this office are obtained from claims made to the United States for pension and bounty land based upon military service of soldiers in that war. A careful search of the records fails to show such a claim on file on account of the services of Robert Allison as described by you or William Lamkin, Peter Lamkin, Griffin Lewis Lamkin, Griffin Lamkin or Lewis Lamkin, all spellings of the names searched. The record has been found of a Walter Rand of Wake County, North Carolina, which may be of interest to you. His record follows as found in the papers on file in the Revolutionary War claim for pension, W.4773, based upon his military service in that war. Walter Rand was born June 15, 1761, place, and the names of his parents are not shown. While a resident of Isle of Wight County, Virginia, and aged sixteen years, Walter Rand enlisted and served in the Virginia troops as drummer, the names of his officers are not given, and was discharged in the winter of 1779-1780; length of service three years. He was in the battle of Brandywine where he was wounded in his leg. About 1789 Walter Rand moved from Virginia to Wake County, North Carolina. He died December 17 or 19, 1812, in Wake County, North Carolina. Walter Rand married February 13, 1783, place not stated, Mary Parker, who was born April 14, 1765, place, and the names of her parents not given. Soldier's widow, Mary Rand, applied for pension August 20, 1839, at which time she was a resident of Wake County, North Carolina. She was allowed pension. The following names of the children of Walter and Mary Rand are shown: John Rand born October 22, 1786 Betsey Rand born February 22, 1789 William Rand born June 29, 1791 Parker Rand born August 11, 1793 Nathaniel Greene Rand born January 18, 1796 Harrison Rand born September 29, 1798 Molsey Rand (daughter) born January 16, 1801 The following family data are also shown: ...Rand, son of Nathaniel G.R. and Phereba Rand ...13th day of March A.D. 1822 [edge of record torn] Soldier's brother, William Rand, was Clerk of the Court of Cumberland County, North Carolina, after the Revolutionary War. Said William was deceased in 1840, date, and place of his death, and his age not stated. There are no further family data. In order to obtain the date of last payment of pension, the name of person paid and possibly the date of widow's death, you could apply to The Comptroller General, General Accounting Office, Records Division, Washington, D.C., and cite the following data: "Mary Rand, widow of Walter Rand, Certificate No.6745, issued August 29, 1842, rate $80.00 per annum, commenced March 4, 1836, under an Act of Congress approved August 28, 1842, North Carolina Agency."
