Big Fire - Warehouse Totally Destroyed and Several Other Buildings Damaged. (Special telegram to the Dispatch.) WINDSOR, VA., April 14, 1884.- A fire broke out Saturday night about 11 o'clock in the warehouse of J. Bulifant, at this place, and burned the entire house, cook-room, and stock of goods. Mr. Bulifan't wife and children did not save a full suit of clothes. The total loss is $6,000, with insurance for $4,000 on stock. There was no insurance on the building, which was owned by a Mr. Rayford, of Southampton. W. S. Holland's law office was saved by the efforts of some fifty men. His house was damaged, and his law library was scattered around in the rain. Loss, $250. S. G. Darden's residence barely escaped destruction. Loss, $150. The origin of the fire is a mystery, but it is supposed to have been the work of an incendiary. "The Richmond (VA) Dispatch," Apr. 15, 1884 (Vol. 65, No. 91), p. 2, col. 3 The 1885 Land Tax Book for Isle of Wight Co. (p. 50) gives the following: Rayford, Jno.T., res. Southampton, owns in fee, 3a. Lot in Windsor, 8 miles S of C.H., Windsor District, value: $200 land, $400 buildings, $600 total tax levy: gvt, $1.80; schools, 60¢- district 30¢; court, $2.00 While the Isle of Wight Co. branch of the family used RAYFORD, the Southampton Co. branch spelled their name RAIFORD.
